Wednesday Witterings . . .

Good morning from a very chilly Nova Scotia! Its down to one-digit here this morning. 8*C/47*F. It's quite overcast, but bits of sun are showing. No rain in the forecast, again, which is a great pity.  One good thing however is that I read this morning that the Longlake Fire which is burning close to us did not grow yesterday.  We have firefighters from all over fighting it. Water bombers, etc. They are working so hard and we are all so very grateful for their efforts.

Air quality is poor again today and there is an advisory in effect. I don't smell any smoke this morning but that doesn't mean that it isn't there.  Best to be careful.

The Guinea Fowl were back again yesterday morning.  I caught this photo of the leader of the pack. There seem to be only four of them now.  They actually crossed over the busy road that runs up to the main highway at the end of our street.  When Glenna and I drove out to go to meet Christine for lunch, they were all gathered and nibbling on the ground next to the house I lived in when I was a child. It's a wonder none of them got hit by a car as that is a very busy road. They were not there when we returned and I saw no dead bodies, so they must have gotten back safe and gone home to wherever it is they are coming from.

We had a lovely lunch together. The lunch special was the chicken quesadilla, but I opted for a Rueben Sandwich. Glenna and Christine went for the Quesadilla.  I think I got the better lunch, personally, but nobody had any complaints. I think we were all very happy.  The best part of course was spending the time together. Something we don't get to do very often in a social setting. We do see each other at church every Sunday of course, and Glenna just lives across the road from me, but again, we usually only get together on Sundays.

Glenna and I have a common ancestor.  Brigadier General Timothy Dwight Ruggles, who was a Loyalist who helped found the town of Middleton back after the American Revolution. So we call each other cousin. In reality if your family has been living in this Valley for any length of time at all, chances are we are related in some way.

It's kind of nice to think about.

The nights are beginning to draw in a bit now, with sunset coming at about 8:30 p.m. It is just barely starting to get light out when I wake up now, which is close to six a.m. It is hard to believe that we are now into the latter part of August, and the kids will be back at school in just a few weeks.

The shops are filled with "Back to School" things and Halloween Decor and Treats are showing up as well. I suppose they can't wait for that to be over so they can start peddling Christmas.

I don't mind the cooler nights, however. They make for more comfortable sleeping.

This was Nutmeg stretched all out in front of me last night. I couldn't help but take a photograph of him. He was so totally relaxed. It was not long after that that he jumped up on the sofa next to me and nestled into my side for some comfy television viewing.

He is Mr. Personality plus.

They are both big chickens, however. Whenever someone or something new comes into the house, they skedaddle in under my bed, staying there until they feel comfortable coming out again. Cinnamon is usually the first one to emerge and he will follow closely behind. I worry about them getting out because I know that they would be very shy of strangers and would not be likely to approach anyone. I think they would be very afraid.

Cindy and I are popping out to the shops this morning. I was thinking about our friendship last night in bed, about how we have been good friends now, not just sisters, for let's just say, over 60 years. (She doesn't like me mentioning her age.) I was thinking about different things we have always done together. I remembered pushing her around in my doll carriage when she was really small. There is a photo somewhere of me doing just that. She is tucked/folded into the carriage along with a pillow (for comfort and a huge pile of books stacked on top of her. Fast asleep she is.

I remember when she got very sick. She had rheumatic fever as a young child.  We shared a bedroom for most of our growing up years. She woke up and needed to go to the bathroom and couldn't walk for some reason and I had got her onto a blanket and was dragging her down the hall to the bathroom when mom woke up and came out to see what was wrong.

I used to go to bed a bit later than her most nights as I was older and when I got into bed, I used to make sure the bedclothes were tucked in right up to her chin. I always thought there was a monster that lived under our bed.  The one thing this monster did not like eating was people's heads, so I made sure, always, that nothing but her head was showing. Keeping her safe from the monster's voracious appetites.

I was probably much closer to her than I was to our brother when we were growing up, probably because of the age difference.  We are all pretty close to each other now, which is nice.  I always think that one of the greatest gifts our parents gave to us was each other.

I know it is not that way with everyone, but I am grateful that it is that way for us. We love and respect each other.

So anyways, we are popping out this morning. I have a few errands to carry out. I need to deposit a check in the bank and get some cat food, water, and a few other bits. We didn't do Sunday Dinner this week, so I think probably as well, I just want to spend some time together.

I decided yesterday that I was going to pick a small area in my house each day and clear the clutter. Yesterday it was my coffee table. I had let it pile up a bit with books and magazines. And a few other bits. It is easily done. You get this thing out to do something and leave it there, and then you get another thing out another time.  Not putting any of it away, and before you know it things get cluttered.  I always tell myself I am going to put everything away as soon as I am finished with it and then I don't.

It is a bad habit of mine that I need to break.

I was also thinking yesterday that it is time for me to be thinking about the fall cleanup and that I should be sorting out stuff to put out for that. I can just keep it all in the garage until the time comes and then just pull it out then.

Famous last words. ha ha

And with that I best leave you with a thought for the day  . . .

A thought to carry with you . . .

I am sharing my thoughts on how to save money on your Grocery Bills in The English Kitchen today. I thought it would be a nice thing to share and am also looking to read other people's suggestions on what they do to save money in the comments section as well.  Food has gotten so expensive.  Every little helps!

I hope you have a beautiful day!  Whatever you get up to, stay safe, be happy. Don't forget!
