Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens . . . .

These are a few of my favourite things  . . .

Tinned pears, drained and served ice cold from the refrigerator with buttered saltine crackers.  Call me crazy, but I love them.   I have always loved tinned pears and tinned peaches . . .  well most tinned fruits, with the exception of tinned berries.  I don't like them.

Pink glassware.   I think it is so beautiful.   Well, any coloured glassware really . . .  blue, pale grey . . .   if its glass and its coloured, I love it.

These types of enamel salt and match holders.    Especially vintage ones.   I don't own one but that doesn't stop me from liking them.  I would if I could . . .

Greengate ceramics.   I have a few and I never, or only ever very rarely use them.  They are expensive, but they are quite beautiful.   My most cherished . . .  two tiny blue and white egg cups with matching egg spoons.

We have never used them.

Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls.   I love them.  With fried rice.  They are always my favourite thing on a Chinese Buffet . . .  as well as the chicken wings.   I have never been to a Chinese Buffet over here in the UK.  I don't even know if there is such a thing.  The one thing we always do when we go back to Canada is to have at least one meal out at the local Chinese Buffet restaurant.  Its not cheap, but its worth every penny.

The Queen.  I love her.   She has class.   She has never let her people down in my opinion.  She has given her whole life over to service to this Country.  She is the epitome of the perfect Monarch.  God bless her.  (When I was a child, I thought she and my mom looked alike.  I think they did look very similar.)  I have a great deal of respect for most of the royals actually.   It cannot be easy living in the fishbowl they have to live in.   Most of what they have doesn't belong to them.  It belongs to the Country.   I think they more than earn every penny they get.   When you think about it, the Royal family brings in millions of pounds of revenue from tourism to this country every year, maybe even billions.  Lets face it . . .  people don't come for the weather.  Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, the Royal parks, Victoria and Albert Museum, Horseguards Parade, etc.  They are all tourist magnets.

Nigel Slater.  He is my favourite Celebrity Chef next to Tamasin Day Lewis.  I love how both of these people cook.  They are not fancy, smancy cooks.  Simple ingredients done well.  They cook the way I want to eat and the food is the star. If they do have ego's . . .  I have never seen them.

Meringues with fresh berries and cream.   Heaven on earth, especially when English berries are in season.   Just beginning here . . .  the next month or two will be brilliant.  Our plants are covered with blooms!

Seeing my work framed and in someone's home.   I only ever very rarely get to see this.  I have work all over the world, but I have never seen how its being used.  This is a rare treat!

You know  . . .  I never see myself as being an artist . . .  but I think if you have work that is all over the world that people cherish and use to decorate their homes with that kind of makes you an artist eh?  Hmm . . .  that might be another one of my favourite things.  Being seen as an artist. ☺

And that is some of my favourite things for this week!

A thought to carry with you through today . . .

Wednesday thoughts . . .

 photo SAM_7051_zps5ea8f1ea.jpg

If you don't know the kind of person I am,
and I don't know the kind of person you are,
a pattern that others made may prevail in
the world and following the wrong god
home, we may miss our star . . .
~William Stafford

I have always maintained that inside each human heart there is a God shaped hole that only He can fill.  At the root of this,  is the realisation that we are not merely humans having a "spiritual experience" here on earth, but rather spirits having a "human experience."

It has been scientifically proven that if you dig a hole, sooner or later something will take up residence there, even if it is just dust.  Holes, by their very existance, beg to be filled.  It is the same with that God shaped hole in our hearts.  It begs to be filled.

I am not talking about religion here, but hearts and holes  . . .  and I have been taught that God is love.

God is love. Love is the fundamental essence of His nature and character . . . His very being. God is perfect in love. God’s love is manifested by His absolutely pure desire to care for, share and give. And it falls to reason that . . .  if you have a God shaped hole in your heart which  only He can fill . . .  it needs to be filled with love.

And that is my religion, my raison d'etre . . . to love.  I may choose to worship that very God who takes up that space in my heart in a different way than you do, but it all boils down to the same thing in the end.  If I am not loving others and life itself, and expressing that love with action . . .  then that hole in my heart is still empty and I am still searching for something to fill it with.

Some people spend their whole lives searching for the missing puzzle piece to fill that empty hole in their hearts.  They try filling it with many things, but nothing that sustains or fulfils them . . .  not in the way that God's love can fill it.  These things/experiences/ etc, become their gods . . .  but they are gods with hollow feet and no meaning or purpose.

When our hearts are filled with His love, we can endure pain, quell fear, forgive freely, avoid contention, renew strength, and bless and help others.

A bell's not a bell til you ring it . . . a song's not a song til you sing it.  Love in your heart wasn't put there to stay.  Love  . . .  isn't love, til you give it away. ~Oscar Hammerstein ll

Love hs the ability to touch every heart.   Why else do the simple words “I love you” bring so much joy to the human heart.  Mankind may give various reasons for this, but the real reason is  . . . that every person who comes to this earth is the spirit son or daughter of God . . .  and . . . .  since all love emanates from God . . . indeed,  is God  . . . we are born with the natural capacity and the desire to love and to be loved. Responding to love is part of our very being . . .  our fabric.   We innately desire to reconnect here on earth  . . . with the love we felt there in the heavens . . . and it is only as we feel God’s love and fill our hearts with His love . . .  with Him, because He is love  . . .  that we can  be truly happy.

And that love shared  . . .  is doubled.  Sharing that love with others is the key to real happiness, joy and fulfillment  here on this earth.  Our joy now and forevermore . . .  is inextricably tied to our capacity to love.

And God  . . .  Is . . .  Love.

Just my thoughts this morning  . . .

Look at what I did yesterday.  Its Marie Antoinette.  Just a bit of fun  . . . and yes . . .  the pink hair again.  I do so love pink hair . . .  and cake for that matter!

Oh, I would love a cake balloon!  Now that would be fun.

Cooking in The English Kitchen today  . . . Stuffed  Baby Sweet Bell Peppers.

I hope you have a lovely Wednesday, filled with sweetness, joy and yes, plenty of love.  Don't forget . . .

The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, May 24th, 2016

Outside my window ...
Looks as if it is going to be another fine day.  I am really loving and enjoying these fine days we are having.  The garden is growing by leaps and by bounds!

I am thinking ...
Did you know that yesterday at least 27 schools across the country had to be evacuated on an important GCSE day due to repeated bomb threats, including our local highschool here in Blacon???   A man with an American accent saying that there were bombs on site and that shrapnel would take our children's heads off.   And yet . . .  this is the most interesting bit, we turned the news on and it was not being reported?  I even checked on the BBC news site and it wasn't being reported there???  Surely this is news???

I am thankful for ...
On Saturday the Red Arrows were practicing right over our house and flying really low due to cloud cover.  They were really, really loud and the thought entered my mind that if they crashed it would create a total disaster and lots of people would be killed.  I am thankful that they didn't crash. lol  They were flying seriously low!  I don't think that should be allowed over a heavily populated area!

In the kitchen ...

On my "To Cook" list ...

From Delish, Greek Salad Pita Pockets with Grilled Chicken.   These look just wonderful!

I am creating ...

I really like these reusable and washable baking dish covers.  What a great thing to have for taking dishes to pot lucks, etc.  or fridge storage.  From Smashed peas and Carrots on Riley Blake Designs.

How to make real flower resin jewelry. From Beading Gem.  I love the Dandelion.

Create your own Button Bracelets. From Hope Studios.   I have made these before and they are super simple and super cute!

Cutest little pompom bunnies.  From Big Cartel.   So sweet.

Blooming Hearts.  From Simply Tale.  So cute.

I am reading ...

The Red Leather Diary, by Lily Koppel

Rescued from a Dumpster on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, a discarded diary brings to life the glamorous, forgotten world of an extraordinary young woman. For more than half a century, the red leather diary lay silent, languishing inside a steamer trunk, its worn cover crumbling into little flakes. When a cleaning sweep of a New York City apartment building brings this lost treasure to light, both the diary and its owner are given a second life.

Recovered by Lily Koppel, a young writer working at the New York Times, the journal paints a vivid picture of 1930s New York—horseback riding in Central Park, summer excursions to the Catskills, and an obsession with a famous avant-garde actress. From 1929 to 1934, not a single day's entry is skipped.

Opening the tarnished brass lock, Koppel embarks on a journey into the past, traveling to a New York in which women of privilege meet for tea at Schrafft's, dance at the Hotel Pennsylvania, and toast the night at El Morocco. As she turns the diary's brittle pages, Koppel is captivated by the headstrong young woman whose intimate thoughts and emotions fill the pale blue lines.

Who was this lovely ingénue who adored the works of Baudelaire and Jane Austen, who was sexually curious beyond her years, who traveled to Rome, Paris, and London? Compelled by the hopes and heartaches captured in the pages, Koppel sets out to find the diary's owner, her only clue the inscription on the frontispiece—"This book belongs to . . . Florence Wolfson." A chance phone call from a private investigator leads Koppel to Florence, a ninety-year-old woman living with her husband of sixty-seven years. Reunited with her diary, Florence ventures back to the girl she once was, rediscovering a lost self that burned with artistic fervor.

Joining intimate interviews with original diary entries, Koppel reveals the world of a New York teenager obsessed with the state of her soul and her appearance, and muses on the serendipitous chain of events that returned the lost journal to its owner. Evocative and entrancing, The Red Leather Diary re-creates the romance and glitter, sophistication and promise, of 1930s New York, bringing to life the true story of a precocious young woman who dared to follow her dreams.

I love these types of books.

I am looking forward to ...
All of the fresh fruits and vegetables that the season has to offer us . . .  the strawberries are coming into season now!  Also Todd is having his ears syringed today, which will not be pleasant for him, but which will mean that he will finally be able to hear again and I won't have to shout to be heard!

Small and Wonderful Things . . .

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny?...It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. what you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life. It's the small things in life which truly mean the most. Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

In our church we can get a special blessing called a "Patriarchal Blessing."   This is a special blessing pronounced upon a member by the "laying on of hands" by the Stake Patriarch of the Stake in which they live and worship.  Unlike other priesthood blessings, patriarchal blessings are recorded and archived at LDS Church headquarters.  Under ordinary circumstances, a member will receive only one such blessing in his or her lifetime.  After having a Patriarchal Blessing, usually a few weeks later, the member will receive a hard copy of this blessing via the post, to keep and to refer to throughout their lifetime.   I keep mine in my bedside table.  A "Liahona" is a special type of compass.   I love this quote where President Monson says that your Patriarchal Blessing is a Liahona of light to guide us.   I refer to mine often.   Each time I read it I often see something new in it that I had not noticed or understood in all of my previous readings.  It has been a great source of comfort to me through the years, and is something which I treasure greatly.  It is not just a piece of paper.  It is a piece of paper which has special revelations pertaining to me and my life printed upon it, revelations which I believe have come from my Heavenly Father.  I know of no other church in the world which has such a thing.  One thing which my Patriarchal Blessing says is that I will be as a light on a hill to my family.  There have been times over the intervening years when knowing this has been the only thing which has enabled me to keep putting one foot in front of the other, to keep moving forward and to not lay down in defeat.  Knowing that my Heavenly Father has such faith in me is a great blessing to me.

I do not know where I would be without prayer.   Prayer is like my secret weapon or power that I use multiple times every day.   It is life sustaining and soul enriching.   I can honestly say that I have never said a prayer that was not answered in one way or another.  It has sometimes taken years for an answer to come.  It has sometimes taken literally seconds . . .  but the answers have always come.   I love that Garth Brooks song called "Unanswered Prayers."  We may think we are not getting answers to our prayers, but sometimes that is the answer . . .

 photo image_zpsexu02mjm.jpeg

Getting to spend time with these great young people.  I admire them so very much.  I know their struggles and their challenges and yet, they keep doing what they do, despite what  must at times be very disheartening and disappointing.   I have never heard a Missionary say that they hated being on their Missions.   Indeed any Missionary I have ever spoken to will say the opposite . . .  that it was the best two years (Young Men) or eighteen months (Young Women and Senior Couples) of their lives.   They are all such fine examples to me.   I love them to pieces.  I really do.   I love being with them.  I love teaching with them.  I love feeding them.  I love learning with them and being taught by them.  I just plain love being with them full stop.

 photo two_zpsu8cflhga.jpg

Photographs of my grandchildren.   I am not sure if my family realises just how very special seeing a photograph of one of my grandchildren is to me.  Because I have only ever very rarely gotten to spend time with any of them, these photographs are little glimpses into their lives for me . . .  and a way for me to connect with them.   I love all of my children and grandchildren very much.  I never envisioned that I would live so far away from any of them, or for so long.  This is the one thing in my life I would change if it were possible, but it is not possible, at least not at this point in time.  Photographs are my link to them and I treasure each one I get to see.   They may never ever really know me, but I hope that one day they will know that I loved them in a very special way and that no matter how far away I have been, my heart has always covered them and held them in a very special place that is reserved just for them.

If you have not seen this video of this mum in a car with her Chewbacca Mask, you really must.  It will do your heart so much good.   The joy of this woman is so tangible and real.   Oh, but I did smile so much and laugh almost until I cried.   Laughter is always the best medicine!  She reminded me so much of myself when my children were growing up.   What a joi de vivre!  I got a message from my son pointing me to this video, and he said he shared it because it reminded him of the Chewbacca Halloween Costume I bought for him when he was about ten and how I had scared him with the mask, and how much we had laughed about it afterwards.  Of course that mask was not as much fun as this mask appears to be.  The only sounds that mask made was the ones I made for it!  Oh, this little remembrance did make my heart smile.  It's amazing . . .  I bet that costume didn't cost me much more than a few dollars, and here it is some 30 years later still making me smile.  ♥♥♥

 photo DSCN1927_zpshjveqeb5.jpg

They are blooming again.   I love these Oriental Poppies, even if they don't stay in bloom for very long.  They are a prelude to other blooms.  Right now the snap dragons are in bloom and the roses are budding, also the Clematis . . . June is almost upon us and that is when the garden is almost at the height of its beauty.

Another Decluttering post on my journey towards having it all put together . . .

I confess that I am a bit of a collector.  I have various collections . . .  salt and pepper shakers, cream and sugar dishes, small decorative cream jugs, fairies, cookie cutters, craft supplies, etc.  I have a bit of a tendancy to fall in love with things and I think that sometimes I end up going way over the top, which is the case at the moment with cookery books.  I try to cull them . . . but its very hard for me.  As soon as I start looking at them, I start falling in love with them all over again, and then  . . .  I can't bring myself to get rid of them.   It is a problem for me  . . .

The fact is however, that the loveliest, best-planned home in the world can be completely undone by a pile of clutter, or cluttered rooms.  One only has to watch a few minutes of the program Hoarders to be horrified.  I sincerely hope that I never get like that.  That has to be an illness.  I have a hard time comprehending how  people can live with stacks of magazines or too much furniture, etc.

I get so much free stuff sent to me that in my kitchen I can sometimes have counter tops filled with a jungle of bottles and tins of things . . .  so much so at times that there is hardly any workspace left.

That drives me up the wall.

 photo kitchen3.jpg

This is how I like it to look . . .  but in all truth it seldom does.   And I am not like some people, or true hoarders . . .  I notice it and it takes its toll on me.  The reality is we always pay for clutter  in time spent on extra cleaning and in searching for items that are not where they should be.  I hate opening a cupboard and not being able to find what I want without having to empty out the whole cupboard.  Don't you???

The more clutter there is . . .  the more over-whelming it becomes.  There is no joy to be found in that, and I know it.  This year I have been on a journey towards cutting the clutter and downsizing and here is what I have learned so far and been putting into practice.

 photo diningarea3.jpg

One - Cut the clutter by not bringing it into the house to begin with!  This is the hardest thing to do.  Its so very tempting to buy things that you were not really setting out to purchase . . .  but they are on offer, and too good a deal to pass up . . .  or your friend is getting rid of it and you think its a shame to throw it away, etc.  Your house is not a depository for other people's unwanteds, as nice as they may be.  If you don't need it, or if it wasn't on your list of things you have always wanted, or something which you had planned on buying . .  . just pass it by.  Shut your eyes and your heart and your arms.  You don't need it.

Two -  Don't bring anything into the house unless you know exactly where it is going to go and you have a specific space, idea, or plan  for it. Just don't bring it in.

Three -  Just how much storage space do you have available to you???  Be realistic about it.  Stuffing things into cupboards, armoires, drawers, closets, sheds . . .  until they can't hold anymore defeats the very purpose of their existance.  There are so many times I find myself storing something away and then . . .  it's true . . .  out of sight, out of mind.  I never use it again, but then when I go to get rid, I think to myself . . .  "But I might need it some day" . . . . STOP that kind of thinking.  If you haven't looked at it or used it in the past three to six months, chances are you probably never will.  We have things in our shed that we haven't even looked at for the last six years.  It is time to be rid.  Seriously.

 photo diningarea1.jpg

Four -Another good place to begin paring down is the bookshelf.   I have . . .  and I kid you not . . .  I have TWELVE bookcases.  Seriously.   Yes . . .  TWELVE.  An even dozen.  I daunting number. I do not need all of those books . . . most are cookery books.  And I love them.   I think perhaps what I need to do is to take one shelf at a time, one day at a time and if it isn't a book that I have cooked out of even in the past year . . .  then I really need to give it away.  But it is going to be so, so hard, because I just love all of them.  I really do.

The thought of getting rid of any of them makes me sad  . . .  and yet at the same time, I feel the weight of them on my soul.  I did give about 12 of them away a week or so ago to a gal who loves to bake.  It made me feel really good to give them to someone that I knew was going to love them as much as I do, and who would use them, which I wasn't doing.  Maybe that is the key.  Sharing the love with someone that you know will love them too.

It just might be . . .

 photo Christmasreindeer.jpg

Five - Christmas Stuff.  I have a ton of Christmas stuff.  Most of it we don't use.  Why do I keep it?   I really need to go into my Christmas boxes . . .  while its not Christmas . . .  and pare it all down to what I actually still use and just pitch the rest.

Six - Too much furniture.  Too large furniture. This is a real way to clutter your home up.  Keeping furniture that doesn't truly fit the space and style which surrounds it.   There has to be a better way.  Looking at the room you are decorating, think about what you have in it.  Keep only that which is functional, fits the space, is attractive and that you love.  Get rid of everything else.  If it doesn't fit you must  . . . wait that was the trial of the century, but really . . .  if it doesn't fit your space, time to let it go . . .

The truth is every home has spots that are magnets for clutter.  Think of the junk drawer.  If its ready for the junk drawer, perhaps it is time to rethink even having it in the first place.  The quickest and best way to tackle cluttter is to identify the trouble spots and then take them on first.  You shouldn't just take the clutter from one room and move it to another.  That is not de-cluttering.    Make sure everything has a home, a spot where it belongs.   And then make sure that it lands in that spot when you are finished using it, etc.  Make it a habit.  I have applied that principle to my e-mail box and have kept it at below 100 e-mails for the past three  months.   That was a real biggie to me.  I am proud of that accomplishment.  If I can do it in my e-mail box, I can now apply that principle to my whole house.

Probably the most important thing you can do is to make a master plan/list for doing a major clean up if your home has become too cluttered.   But be realistic about it.   It didn't become cluttered overnight and it won't declutter overnight either.  Break the job down into several realistic, specific goals and then tackle them one at a time.

And here is my largest and probably best tip.  Set aside time each day for clearing up the clutter that has accumulated just during that day.  If you stay on top of it regularly, it doesn't become overwhelming.  It need only take a few minutes.  Just like I clean the bathroom each morning as soon as I finish getting dressed/makeup/etc . . .  make a spot in each day at the end of the day . . .  before you settle into your evening . . .  to clear up from the day you've spent.    This is the perfect way to relax and enjoy the evening, in your nice and tidy home.

The End.

Todd's the only one not making a face.   haha  This is a selfie of the whole district enjoying our BBQ together yesterday afternoon in our home.  Starting from the middle front and going around to the left.  Sister Carter (Michigan) and Sister Steel (South Africa) (serving in Wrexham), Sister Fernandez (England) (serving in Chester), Me, Todd, Elder Schofield (SLC) (serving in Chester), Elder Nielsen (Sweden) (serving in Chester), Elder Launer (Switzerland) (serving in Chester), Elder Lolesi (New Zealand)  (serving in Chester) and finally Sister Doncheva (California) (Serving in Chester).  Good times!
