Small and wonderful things . . .

 photo SMALLANDWONDERFULTHINGS_zps0c49db7e.jpg

"The world is fairly studded and strewn with pennies cast broadside from a generous hand. But who gets excited by a mere penny?...It is dire poverty indeed when a man is so malnourished and fatigued that he won't stoop to pick up a penny. But if you cultivate a healthy poverty and simplicity, so that finding a penny will literally make your day, then, since the world is in fact planted with pennies, you have with your poverty bought a lifetime of days. It is that simple. what you see is what you get." ~Anne Dillard

A few of the small and wonderful things which bring untold joy into my life.   It's the small things in life which truly mean the most.  Simple abundance . . . it's the best.

 photo 3029b4f353147a62e8c94b256c5dbadf_zps4017e201.jpg

80% of the world lives in abject poverty.   I go to sleep each night in a warm and comfy bed, with a belly that is full, in a home which is quite spacious and warm and dry.  I do not know what it is like to be truly hungry or truly afraid.   I may think sometimes that I am poor, but that is only because I don't have what a handful of other people might have.   To many in the world . . .  I am considered to be wealthy.  You are considered to be wealthy.

 photo Squatter-settlements-photo1_zps6b0ff970.jpg

We are a part of the 20%.   I get up each morning and I spend time each day pondering on what I am going to make for our dinner . . .  not if we are going to have dinner today.   I have clean water to drink and to cook with and to bathe in.  I am loved and appreciated.   I am blessed.

 photo PooprNations_zps930ef2a6.jpeg

There are days when I throw away more food  than 80 % of the world's  people have to eat in a day . . .

 photo poverty2_zpsca53cede.jpg

Barely a day passes that I don't grumble out of frustration that my kitchen is too small to hold all the wonderful things that I own that help me to prepare my food, or store my food . . .  or . . . just  my food.

 photo top_10_underdeveloped_countries_in_the_world_Sierra_Leone_zps5fe4eb91.jpg

When my clothes are dirty . . .  I simply throw them into the washer . . .  in fact, when compared to some people's clothing . . .  my clothes are never really dirty and I wash them anyways.  I have the luxury of being able to put on something clean every day if I wish, and it's not always the same thing  . . .  of having a pair of shoes that fit and keep my feet reasonably warm and dry . . .  and in fact of having another pair of shoes that I save for "good."

 photo 2014-02-07-poverty_zps482a1741.jpg

I buy my food in shops which are relatively clean . . . and filled with abundance and variety and luxury.  My shops throw out more food in a day that many people in the world see in a week, or a month or a year . . .

 photo Iraq_-_Over_20_percent_of_Iraqis_live_below_the_poverty_line_zps50ab8c08.jpg

Our children play in school yards each day that are clean and that are safe . . . where they are being given a free education that many of them will squander, or take for granted.

 photo 347f62e3f6c5dd45877df1a0c1899e97_zps78a1b546.jpg

Most will never have to sell their bodies, or beg . . . or worse . . .

 photo images_zps7933ef34.jpg

Many people in this world put their lives at great risk just for the chance to have a portion of what I already have . . .

A roof over my head.  Food in my belly.   Clothes on my back.   Clean water.   Freedom from fear.  Free medical care.  A free education.   The right to worship as I wish.   The luxury of choice.

 photo images_zpsefaab14e.jpg

Something is very wrong with this world.   Very wrong.   We should never take for granted what we are so very blessed to have . . .  and we should never squander it.  We are the 20%.  I hope and pray that one day things will be very, very different and in the meantime I do what I can to alleviate the sorrow and the poverty of the 80%.  I may not be able to do much, but I can do something.

There is none so poor as those who are so poor of spirit that they cannot stop to help to lift another up or to share their crust of bread with one who hungers . . .

This seems almost hedonistic now . . . I apologise for that.  ☺

As sands through the hourglass . . .

 photo d28c532bc54d7f7e903949d9696b0b62_zpsb491ca93.jpg

The beauty of the English countryside at all times of the year has something to do with the gentle way in which the cycle of the seasons turns . . . .

 photo SAM_0768_zps2fddb0f7.jpg

You cannot precisely put a finger upon the exact point of transition, nor can you isolate the moment in which it all changes.   It creeps up with stealth and steals  upon you slowly . . .

 photo SAM_0811_zps87b69daf.jpg

So slowly, and  so very unobtrusively as to be almost imperceptable.  There is no sudden and dramatic change of scene . . .

 photo SAM_0812_zps93d49ad3.jpg

Instead the tops of the trees quite slowly and silently shift from greens into golds and ambers . . .  like a sponge absorbing coloured water as the change slowly seeps and creeps until it is quite simple sodden with it . . .

 photo SAM_0817_zpse695060d.jpg

and you find yourself wondering . . . how did that happen?  Why did I not see it coming?  Why was I not prepared?  I am never prepared . . .

 photo SAM_0807_zps46fac44c.jpg

As the daisies of Michaelmas give way to giant-headed sunflowers, misty mornings and dew filled nights . . .  the mauve flush of the heather and the red of the creeper cover the hillsides and byways . . . and tell of the waning of summer's delight . . .

 photo SAM_0854_zpsb4fb5717.jpg

the season of fruitfulness . . .  golden . . .  prelude to autumn . . .  the opening phase of woodlands cloaked in a garment of glory . . . the hedgerows will have their harvest tide . . . once again with nuts and fruits in rich abundance on tangle sprays swelling in the golden sunlight of mellow days . . .

 photo 8e8aac35fcad1a9b9e5a4e17df44d63d_zps84dec136.jpg

and cooler nights   Brambles thickly matted with their red and purple load.  Scarlet hips like fairy lamps strung between the branches . . . with mauve and red and rosy globes on leafless branches borne . . . with berries on spindle bushes and haws fixed between thorns . . .

 photo 8505923f081d9758fcfe415d3aea5877_zps184a0403.jpg

Even though to live in England means many days of grey skies and unpredictable weather . . .  I am grateful for a country where the grass is greenest . . .  and even in periods of transition . . .

 photo c4ef613c061d914d2141a0723e49ac46_zps17f905b5.jpg

there is a peculiar beauty as . . . ever so gently a beneficent Mother Nature leads us from one thing into another . . . so as to take one's breath away . . .

My thoughts this morning on these last few days of summer  . . .

Rambling thoughts . . .

 photo MarieAliceCindyDavidDadsChaircroppe.jpg

My dad has always had a lazy boy chair for as long as I remember.   When we were children we were never ever allowed to sit on it.   This photograph was a rare exception.   The gears were quite dangerous I think and my mother was always afraid that we would get pinched or caught in them, or that we would break the chair.   This photo is from left to right, myself (about 6) my sister (about 3) and my brother (about 1).  We look like pretty happy children, and I think that we were pretty happy children.   We had good parents who loved us and took good care of us.  So many children don't have those things.  They taught us to be good and decent people and I am so very grateful for all that they did and do for us.   We are so blessed to still have them with us.

 photo meandmomcropped.jpg

The first four years of my life were spent in Germany for the most part.   My father was in the airforce and he was posted to the Canadian Base 4 Wing, Baden Baden.   I don't have a lot of memories of Baden Baden . . . little glimpses at best and I don't know if they are really memories or memories of photographs I might have seen.   It's hard to tell.

We did not have a television.   All the programing was in German and my parents didn't see the need.  I never saw a television until we left Germany to come back to Canada.   We stayed at my maternal grandparents in Nova Scotia until my father had procured housing for us in Manitoba where he had been posted.  My brother was born during our stay there.  I have lots of happy memories of our months spent in that small house in that small town in that small province.  It really was a small house and it was filled to capacity, with my mother, sister and I . . .  my Aunt Freda, her husband Harold and their little boy, my grandmother and grandfather, my cousin Ronnie, and my great grandmother.

 photo GrammyWoodworthcropped-1.jpg

I adored my Grandmother and Aunt Freda (back row, my nan is the woman with the dark hair looking down and my Aunt Freda is the girl beside her.)  I can still remember how my Nan smelled and feel the comfort of her ample and soft lap.   My mother has a letter she wrote to her in which she talks about missing me and how I was the only one of all the grandchildren who outwardly loved her back.    I love reading those words . . .  because I did love my grandmother very much.  She was very kind.  I know this because of the way that she was with me, and from her words in the letters, and from the way she cared for her own mother and for Ronnie, who was a child who came to live with them from the children's aid.   That is him burying his head into her front in this photograph and she is looking down at him.   When my grandmother passed away my Aunt Freda finished bringing him up.  We were always the only family he ever had, and we never saw him as anything else but family.

My grandmother died when I was  6 years old, about a year or so after we had been living with them.   She had cancer and must have been quite ill oftimes when we were still there.   My Great Grandmother Best is in this photograph as well.  She is the old lady sitting in the front.  She died while we were there at my grandparents house.  I can remember being shooed out of the room as she lay dying.  My mother wasn't allowed in either because she was pregnant with my brother at the time, and they thought that seeing my Great Grandmother dying would affect the baby somehow.   They did have funny ideas in those days.

 photo FamilywomenCROPPED.jpg

This is a photograph which was taken before we left Canada to live in Germany.  That is my Aunt Freda holding me, my mother and my Great Grandmother Best.  The only people still living from that photograph are my mother and myself.   We lost my Aunt Freda about 8 years ago now.   She was my favourite Aunt.  We had always been very close.  She was one of those people that you could talk to about anything.   My mother says that when I was small she used to play Leave it to Beaver with me.  Leave it to Beaver was a television show that was quite popular at the time.  (We have the whole series on DVD and it's timeless in the viewing pleasure it gives. )  She had endless patience and time for me . . . always.

The fact that my Aunt, who was a mother herself at the time, took the time to play with me shows me how very much my Aunt loved me.  I can remember seeing a fashion doll in the bedroom she shared with my Uncle Harold during those months we lived there waiting for my dad.  It was a large doll, probably about 24 inches tall . . . with a black short curly do and was wearing a blue silk dress with a crinoline beneath the skirt and a sheer shawl on the shoulders . . .  and she had high heels.  I can remember looking through the keyhole into the room and eyeballing it . . . frequently.  My Uncle Harold had given it to her as a gift.   When we finally left that home,  to go live in Manitoba, she gifted it to me, much to my Uncle Harold's disapproval.  I still miss my Aunt Freda, but I can always feel her close to me.   I get a lot of comfort in knowing that someday I will see her again, as I will all of my loved ones.  I really believe that to be true.

 photo DSC_9253.jpg

I have been blessed in my life to be surrounded by good and honest people.  These were humble people.  People who never really travelled very far from their homes or circumstances, but who were able to teach me much more than other people I have known.  People who gave to me of their hearts, that most precious gift of all . . .  the gifts of their time and of their love . . . patience and understanding.

When I was a little girl I thought that life when I grew up would be like the life I saw portrayed in the Flintstones.   That I would have a husband who wasn't very bright, but who worked hard for his family  . . .  and a nice little home with a next door neighbor that I could be best friends with and that we would have adventures together and bring our husbands and children up together, sharing all the laughter and the tears and everything in between that life throws at you.  It never really dawned on me that life could be anything else, even though my parents weren't living that Donna Reed/June and Ward Cleaver existance . . . it never connected.  I just thought that life would be a happily ever after, all problems solved in a half hour, television sitcom type of existance.

Life isn't that though.  Life is difficult at the best of times.   But life is mostly very good and can be filled with much joy despite the hard times.  We cannot solve all of our problems in a half or one hour time slot.  Bad stuff happens to good people.  We laugh and we cry . . .  and we grow old . . . and it seems to me that the older I get, the  more I think about the good old days and remember all of the things which helped to shape who I am.  Trials help us to develop strengths and to become better people.   You cannot taste the sweet for what it is,  if you have never tasted the sour as well.

 photo Rainbow.jpg

Life is not about pots of gold at ends of rainbows . . .  but about the journey you took to get to the end of the rainbow.  It's about reaching out to each other in love and compassion and understanding.   It's knowing who we are and why we are here . . .  and about becoming . . . better people.  It's about making a positive difference for the better in the lives of others we touch.

I don't really think that we can sincerely begin to truly live our lives with the passion we are meant to live them with . . .  until we learn to give them away.

Just my thoughts this morning.  I am grateful for all those who have touched and who still touch my life in meaningful and enduring ways.

Sorry for rambling a bit here this morning . . .  some mornings are just like that!

A thought to carry with you through this day . . .

Friday Finds

 photo FridayFinds_zpsb214ccd8.jpg

A few of the wow moments, or things I discover each week that tickle my fancy.  I hope that they may inspire or tickle yours too!

An ironing board cover which has instructions and guidelines printed on it to help you iron shirts in the best way possible!  Why didn't I think of that???  Oh yes . . .  probably because Todd does the ironing! tee hee   From Mod Cloth.

Make Glassware Shine With Vinegar: A simple dish rag or towel with a few tablespoons of white vinegar on it is all you need to clean things up. It will evaporate and leave you without any taste, but if you're still worried you can fill a shallow pan or plastic dish tub with hot water and add 2 cups of vinegar to it. Give things a soak, shake off excess water and let sit to dry.  For this and a whole lot more check out Apartment Therapy!

Ten surprisingly filthy things you never thought about cleaning.   A serious eye opener here about the things in your home which harbour germs and bacteria and which we never think about cleaning.   Actually I regularly clean the remotes and the telephone, but you will be surprised to find out what else needs cleaning.   From Life As Mama.

Aren't these adorable?   I know!  Unicorn ear buds for your listening pleasure.   Cute, cute, cute!  What a great stocking stuffer these would be!  Found on Think Geek.

They also sell these . . .  so all of your chargers are on one handy usb cable.  Neato!

A cute do it yourself purse organizer for bobby pins, earrings, hair ties, etc. to keep in your purse so that these things don't get lost in the abys which is a woman's handbag!  Found on I heart Organizing.   Brilliant page!

How to grow your own gingerroot!  It looks easy enough!  Found on Dream State.

Homemade Almond Paste.  I use so much of this stuff, especially around the holidays!  It is incredibly easy to make yourself.  Found on The Golden Pear.

How to make yourself heart shaped mini cake tins using tin cans and a bit of ingenuity!  Just brilliant.  Found on The Kitchen Paper.  I would have never thought of this on my own.  Absolutely fabulous!  People are just so smart!

No source, but what these people have done is take a picture of themselves in each state on the map they have visited and cut it out as the shape of the state and applied it.  What a brilliant idea!  I would love to do this for all the counties of England, and of course Scotland and Wales.  What a unique travelogue!

Free Printable Christmas Tickets.   Handy for gift wrapping, card making, etc.   Found on U Printables!  I just love free printables, don't you?

And that's it for this week!  I hope you saw something which you will find useful here too!

A thought to carry with you through today  . . .

Five Things About Me . . .

 photo MarieandCindy.jpg

This is a photograph of me pushing my sister around in my doll pram.   She fell asleep in it and I have books piled on top of her.   I think I must have been around six years old in this.   As you can see I have my priorities right.   Family and books/knowledge.  I think I can probably even tell you which books those are by looking at this photo . . .  the top one is my mother's old home economics text book from when she went to high school.  I about wore that one out and the bottom one is a volume from our encyclopedia from the geography series.

Yep . . . it's another five things about me post!

 photo HER1200638-tktopdown_570g_zps493343c2.jpg

I like ketchup but only on certain things.  I cannot stand it on anything in a bun, such as a hotdog or a hamburger.   Take them out of the bun and I will quite happily eat them with ketchup.  I think it's a bread/ketchup thing.  I am also very particular about my ketchup.   I like Heinz.  I don't like any other kind.   They are just not the same imho.  I am pretty sure if you lined up a bunch of ketchup samplings I could tell you which one was Heinz without looking and just by tasting.   To me there are no other kinds.

I save all of my paper scraps and I use them.   This is a paper scrap I had from where I trimmed a water colour off.  I turned it into a bookmark that I keep in my journal.   Now you can print it off and have one too.  I have fun scribbling and making use of every bit I have.   I use up leftovers . . .  be they paper or potatoes!

 photo c400997c0de0b2701f3414b482effa26_zpsd40f69ab.jpg

I don't drink tea, but I love tea pots.  If I had the space I would collect them.   I don't have the space though, and really at this time in my life I don't think it would be worth collecting them.   They are just dust collections . . . things like this.  That fact doesn't stop me from admiring them however . . .  and I collect them on Pinterest, which takes up no room in my house and costs me nothing but my time.   They also don't need dusting.   It's win/win all around!

I have a thing for pin cushions.  I truly love them.  Any size or colour, or shape, or fabric, or whatever.   I just love pin cushions.  I like making them.  I like using them.   They are sitting all around my craft room.

 photo potroastandpincushion015.jpg

This is my most favourite of them all.

 photo Ukrainian-Daredevil-Mustang-ndash-Not-Afraid-Of-Heights_01--GenCept_zps7c748982.jpg

I am afraid of heights.   Whenever I am up high I feel like I am going to fall . . .  or have the urge to jump.   I don't know why but it scares me.  I don't think I would really ever jump, but I feel like I want to.   I first noticed this when I was in high school.   There was a kind of a balcony near the new gym in our school.  Whenever I was on it, I felt like jumping.  I don't know if this is a common thing, or if I am wierd.   I would never jump . . .  I just feel like it . . .  I stay away from high places and edges if I can.  I don't like feeling like that.  On the other end of the scale . . .  I don't like being underground.   I can remember being taken to an old mine once with a group of people.  I was the only one who could not face going down into it.   I started to but had to get off the elevator because I was feeling all panicked.  I feel all claustrophobic. That is why I want to be cremated and thrown to the wind . . .  so I can soar and fly.

And I think that's five!  I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about me.  I enjoy this exercise each week because I think it's healthy to think about your strengths and weaknesses and everything in between!

Did any of you watch the first of the three part series on Cilla Black this week?   What did you think of it?   I quite enjoyed it actually.   I had never really heard of her before I came over her to the UK.

A thought to carry with you through today . . .
