The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY,  August 31st, 2021

Outside my window ...
The sun is rising. Its getting light outside. Not sure what the day will bring weatherwise. We will have to wait and see, but already there is an autumnal feel in the air. Change is afoot!

I am thinking ...
Darn fruit flies! I just get a handle on them and bang! They are back again! I have a fruit fly trap set, a small bowl of vinegar with some plastic cling film on top, etc. and I catch oodles. It calms down for a day or so and Bingo! They are back again! Its very annoying!

I am looking forward to ...
Seeing how my day unfolds. Every day is a new opportunity, an adventure waiting to be had. Yes, my life is rather boring compared to many, but each day is mine to do with as I please.

I am thankful for ...
Family, faith, health, home . . . the ability to support myself.

In the kitchen ...

On my "to Cook" list ...

Love and Olive Oil.  Roasted Garlic Jelly.

One of my favorite things ...
Blogging.  It has to be or I wouldn't be doing it. I love the sharing and I love the support.  I love the blogging community and I love each of you, my faithful friends!  You mean so much to me!

I am wanting to create ...

Remember these?  That old phentex yarn.  my sister made an orange, white and lime green poncho out of it. Apparently you can use any kind of yarn for these slippers, so long as it is worsted weight.

Church Mouse Yarns.  Family Slippers. Love this pattern also.

Joann.  Also very similar. Easy to print the pattern.

Drops Design. Party Slippers.

I love Crochet.  Folded Slippers Tutorial.

I am in a slipper making mood.

I am reading ...

Gap Creek, by Robert Morgan

There is a most unusual woman living in Gap Creek. Julie Harmon works hard, "hard as a man" they say, so hard that at times she's not sure she can stop. People depend on her. They need her to slaughter the hogs and nurse the dying. People are weak, and there is so much to do.

She is just a teenager when her little brother dies in her arms. That same year she marries Hank and moves down into the valley where fire and visions visit themselves on her and where con men and drunks come calling.

Julie and Hank discover that the modern world is complex, grinding ever on without pause or concern for their hard work. To survive, they must find out whether love can keep chaos and madness at bay. With Julie, Robert Morgan has brought to life one of the most memorable women in modern American literature with the same skill that led the Boston Book Review to say that he writes "with an authority usually associated with the great novelists of the last century."

In this novel, Morgan returns to the vivid world of the Appalachian high country to follow Julie and Hank in their new life on Gap Creek and their efforts to make sense of the world in the last years of the nineteenth century. Scratching out a life for themselves, always at risk of losing it all, Julie and Hank don't know what to fear most--the floods or the flesh-and-blood grifters who insinuate themselves into their new lives.

Their struggles with nature, with work, with the changing century, and with the disappointments and triumphs of marriage make this a powerful follow-up to Morgan's acclaimed novel, The Truest Pleasure.

Its really good! I am enjoying.

Dreaming About ...

Images from here.

Wooden spools  . . .

Hand knit mittens  . . .

Silver buttons  . . .

Vintage quilts  . . .

Antique doll houses  . . .

Something to watch ...

Re-watching Gentleman Jack, the story of Anne Lister. Suranne Jones is brilliant in it.

Makes me smile ...

This old picture of myself with my brother and sister. I was probably about 6 years old here, my sister would be 3 and my brother 1.  Oh how I love them both.

Corners of my kingdom ...

  1. I’ve made many knitted slippers over the years, so warm and cozy. Certainly not as humid here in Ontario. I’m knitting scarves, for me as gifts and to donate. Happy Tuesday.

  2. Change is in the air here today, it's cooled off and temps are very pleasant. It will soon be colder and the lovely summer days will end and yes, we will need those slippers to keep our feet warm. After a hot and humid August here, we are looking forward to Fall.

  5. Every year around this time I am visited with fruit flies. I read that they multiply very rapidly, so aside of keeping my sink free (as much as possible) of scraps, I try to kill those that fly around my kitchen window, etc. It seems to help keep the population down. ~Elaine
