The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

 FOR TODAY, December 22, 2020

Outside my window ...
Its dark and cool. I rained yesterday so most of the snow is gone. We had a lot of fog last evening. So no seeing the Christmas Star for us.

I am thinking ...
What a crazy chaotic ride this year has been. I thought I would go back and read what I had written about my thoughts on my last daybook before Christmas last year, but it only made me sad. You life truly turns on a dime. We really don't know what tomorrow will bring to our tables.  This makes me all the more determined to love each day for what it brings to me. To count my blessings when and as I receive them. To know that there are small and wonderful things that are incredibly life enriching in each and every day.

I am thankful for ...
Today. A new day.  A clean page. A fresh start.

In the kitchen ...

Stuffed Sugar Cookies. These are the child of the devil. Oh my gosh. Dangerously moreish. Bake them if you dare.

On my "To Cook" list ...

Peppermint Patty Bars. The Gunny Sack. These look fabulous! Sooo pretty!

Good to know ...

Make your own shapeable ice pack.  You never know when you will need one.

I am wanting to create ...

Ann Wood. Wax paper Crystal snowflakes.  These are pretty!

Lia Griffith, paper houses.  Sweet!

The House That Lars Built.  Printable Retro ornaments.  Cute!

No source.  Just eye candy . . .

Jen Hay's Creations.  Gift Card Stockings.  There's still time!

I am reading ...

The Confession Club, by Elizabeth Berg
In this uplifting novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Story of Arthur Truluv, good friends discover that the things we fear revealing to others can be the very things that bring us closer together.

When a group of friends in Mason, Missouri, decide to start a monthly supper club, they get more than they bargained for. The plan for congenial evenings—talking, laughing, and sharing recipes, homemade food, and wine—abruptly changes course one night when one of the women reveals something startlingly intimate. The supper club then becomes Confession Club, and the women gather weekly to share not only dinners, but embarrassing misdeeds, deep insecurities, and long-held regrets.

They invite Iris Winters and Maddy Harris to join, and their timing couldn't be better. Iris is conflicted about her feelings for a charming but troubled man, and Maddy has come back home from New York to escape a problem too big to handle alone. The club offers exactly the kind of support they need to help them make some difficult decisions.

The Confession Club is charming, heartwarming, and inspiring. And as in the previous books that take place in Mason, readers will find friendship, community, and kindness on full display.

I just started this last night. I love Elizabeth Berg's books. So far, this is a cracker!

Dreaming about ...

A tiny house to call my own. Not necessarily this one . . .

Toasting marshmallows  . . .

Frosted windowpanes, candles gleaming inside, painted candy canes on the tree . . .

Something to watch ...

Every year  . . .

Makes me smile ...

Josh playing Chess with his maternal grandfather. A rare photo as Joshie is camera shy. I love my grandsons.

Corners of my kingdom ...

Lobster Trap Tree by the Lyn family in Eastern Passage.  Beautiful.

A thought to carry with you ...

  1. Sad but true, sometimes it takes something big to happen to make us realize how truly blessed we are. The past is gone, the future is not here, but we do have today!

    1. Its not so much what happens to us that counts Monique, but how we react to it. I am very aware of that and hope and pray for a bright future. Merry Christmas! xoxo

  3. All the years I have read your blog, one characteristic you surely have been and that is optimistic. This too shall pass...and yes, all such awful places leave scars, but the good part is, now you are all the much enabled to help others. Not that I see any reason one ought to have to go through such for any reason...but we surely can make something awful turn into better things!! Besides if we were not good natured, trusting, caring people, the evil cunning sneaky devious devils could not snooker us!! NO shame in being used, Marie...most of us have been used one way or another. Take all the time you need to grieve and get to good places. So lovely you have a lot of kin who love you. (I am a near orphan in that regard now...a lot have died, others shun me/us...all because they do not like how we believe faith-wise). Any rate...LOVE that cottage...how I would love one like that too!!
    HUGS, Elizabeth xoxo

  4. Your whole future is waiting for you, Marie. Don't look back. It's okay to remember the good times, though. I'm going to try the "stuffed" cookies with my shortbreads. I think it would work. Love and hugs, Elaine

  5. I'm happy that you have a new day, a new page and a new start. May your New Year be the best. I find you amazing. You have gone through so much with such grace.
The goodies look delicious of course, and I need to stay out of them.
Thanks for the ice bag recipe. I have a bad back right now and am trying to use ice and heat.
I love the cute tree decorations and the gift card stockings are adorable.
The book looks like a fun one for sure.
I really like the tiny house. I often wish we had a smaller home. We have kept this one, so we have a place for our children to stay when they come. At least a couple of families can. Mostly, we have grandchildren living with us of and on; which is good.
The homemade caramels made me remember, I have fudge to make to tomorrow.
The Holiday movie is a fun one. I haven't seen for a while.
Your Josh is adorable. I love that you got a photo of him.
The Lobster Trap tree is unique for sure.
    Christmas blessings and hugs!
