The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, March 20, 2018

Outside my window ...
It was already getting light out when I got up at 5 am. I could hear the birds singing. I know it will go  back to being dark again come Sunday when our clocks move forward. Today is the first day of Spring.  The days for this year seem to already be slipping off the calendar at an alarming rate.  Time, please stand still, or at least move a tiny bit slower, please!!

I am thinking ...
Todd got a letter in the post yesterday from our GP surgery asking for a telephone consult with the Doctor to discuss the results of his latest blood tests. Now I am back to worrying again, and I am sure he is also, although he hasn't said. Please keep him/us in your prayers that it is nothing sinister.  Thanks!

In the kitchen ...

A Simple Roast Loin of Pork.  I've been doing it like this for years. Its nice and garlicky.  And as a bonus, I made us Cuban Sandwiches with the leftovers.

On my "To Cook" list ...

From Feasting on Fruit.  Medjool sweetened Vegan gluten-free rice crispie treats. These look delicious. Maybe even healthy.

Good to know ...

One Good Thing.  How to rescue old yellowed pillows.

I am creating ...

Nancy's Notions.  A free pattern.  Love this.

The Paper Pixie.  Mini Origami Handbags.  What cute party favours these would be. Video tutorial as well.

Video Tutorial for making these cute quilled Ballerinas.

The Gift of Knitting.  How to knit a perfect edge.  Free finishing technique.

Drops Design.  Free pattern for knitted garter stitch slippers.  Love these.

I am reading ...

If I Forget You, by Thomas Christopher Greene
Two former lovers reconnect in this beautiful and haunting tale of great lost love from the critically acclaimed author of The Headmaster's Wife.

Twenty-one years after they were driven apart by circumstances beyond their control, two former lovers have a chance encounter on a Manhattan street. What follows is a tense, suspenseful exploration of the many facets of enduring love. Told from altering points of view through time, If I Forget You tells the story of Henry Gold, a poet whose rise from poverty embodies the American dream, and Margot Fuller, the daughter of a prominent, wealthy family, and their unlikely, star-crossed love affair, complete with the secrets they carry when they find each other for the second time.

Written in lyrical prose, If I Forget You is at once a great love story, a novel of marriage, manners, and family, a meditation on the nature of art, a moving elegy to what it means to love and to lose, and how the choices we make can change our lives forever.

I have only just started this.

Looking forward to ...
Talking to my mom tomorrow afternoon. Although we mostly talk about the same things these days, I really enjoy our conversations.  Her short term memory might be really bad, but her long term memory is still quite good.

Dreaming about ...

3/4 sleeves, gathers, tunics . . .  leggings and flip flops . . .

Drop waists  . . .  droopy pockets, pushed up sleeves and polka dots  . . .

Washed out denim, baggy and yet stream-lined, assymetrical pockets . . .  clogs  . . . and fish necklaces . . .

Plain and yet sweet . . . pleats and floral applique . . . tiny buttons, gathered edge  3/4 sleeves . . .

Where do I start . . .  so much to love about this  . . . the scarf, the pleats . . .the sheer underdress, the boots . . .

Something to watch  ...

My Girl.  So much to love in this. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. You'll love the characters.  There's a love story.  You'll love the music. No swearing. Hardly any violence.  Jamie Lee Curtis. A sweet, sweet story. Its all good.

A Quote for the Day ...

As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common, everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful. They are the things that fill our lives with comfort and our hearts with gladness - just the pure air to breathe and the strength to breathe it; just the warmth and shelter and home folks; just plain food that gives us strength; the bright sunshine on a cold day, and a cool breeze when the day is warm.

Makes me smile ...

Father and sons  . . .  family . . .  you can see the joy and the love here. They are so comfortable together.

Corner's of my kingdom ...

Aberglasney Gardens, Llangathen, Wales. Aberglasney was made famous by the BBC television series "A Garden Lost in Time" which followed its restoration. Today it is quite simply one of Wales' finest gardens. A renowned plantsman's paradise with a unique Elizabethan cloister garden at its heart.

And that's my daybook for this week!

BOOK OF MORMON CORNER

Today's reading - Mosiah 22:10-23:15
Question What have you learnt from the reading today? What can these verses teach us about our attitude towards new or returning members?
Thoughts - These new members of their congregation were welcomed with joy and acceptance. However the Lamanites noticing they were gone pursued them, they searched diligently for two days to find them. For me, this is important to note. The things that new or returning members have to leave behind in order to join the church might pursue them for days, months, years in their journey through their own wilderness (wilderness is symbolic of purification). This makes me see the great work we can do in encouraging and supporting them as they start on this new and unfamiliar but wonderful path. "See there is no contention among you", is the first of many admonitions and is vital warning for our day too. I have always maintained that you love people into the Kingdom, you don't hammer them in. We are all at different levels in our journies back to our heavenly home. What matters most is only that we are headed in the right direction.

Tomorrow's reading (Day 125) - Mosiah 23:16-39
Talk - David A Bednar - 'Therefore they hushed their fears'
Question - What have you learnt from the reading today? What helps you to hush your fears?

I hope you have a beautiful day!  The sun is shining here and there is a real warmth in it. Don't forget along the way  . . .

  6. Hi Marie~

I'm so glad that Todd is ok! It's always scary to get a letter like that...but I'm so glad it was good news.

I agree with you, time just goes by way too fast! I might grumble a lot about winter, but I have to admit that I love the change of seasons, and I'm always sad when one of them ends and another one starts. I truly don't think there's anything more beautiful than falling snow. On the other hand, I love the see the trees start to bud, and I love it when I hear the chirping of birds in the trees. Welcome Spring!

Your ideas are so fun, I love the hanging basket...I could use about 10 of those around my house. And those cute outfits, oh my goodness, I love them, so adorable.

I love, My Girl! It's one of those movies that really make you think about life and love. I watched it with my granddaughter last year, and we both cried through the whole thing...so sad.

I have been really sick the last week or so, so I am very behind on blogging, but I must say that I have had some very strange dreams! My dreams are all vivid, in color, and I usually remember them, at least for a few minutes after I wake up. I can remember a few dreams from when I was a child, both of them were scary.

Love all your day book, always good ideas and fun things to look at.

I think we have all been that new member in a ward, and it can be terrifying. I need to be better at welcoming new members to our ward, I'm not that lady who is comfortable enough to just go introduce myself...sad but true. I know it makes such a difference to new members or people who move into a new ward. I will try harder... :0)

Have a wonderful day, sweet lady, enjoy those chirping birds and the budding trees! Love you tons!

    Hugs and Love,
    Barb

    1. I am so sorry to read that you have not been well again Barb! Sending healing wishes your way! And much love and uber hugs! I, too, dream vividly in colour and remember them forever. In fact, if I don't remember them, it annoys me, lol. It is hard to be brave enough to put yourself forward when it comes to welcoming new members, but it is always worth the effort! I always remember being the newbie and how daunting it was. I am so grateful for the ones who were not afraid to welcome me in and become my friends. They were especially important to me when not long afterwards I found myself challenged and living all of a sudden on my own in a rented bedroom in a strangers house. It would have been so easy to fall away. I will be eternally grateful for the friendships and the care that helped to keep me in place. Love you tons also! xoxo

  8. I am so happy that Todd got a good report back. I can't imagine how scary it is to wait for a report.
Time just seems to fly a lightening speed. I really wish it would slow down just a tad. i always feel so behind.
    The food looks yummy.
Thanks for the link on the yellow pillows; I need to look into what to do with a few of mine.
I love the organizing bag, purse and especially all those adorable dresses. I must admit I smiled a lot on the last one.
I used to knit years ago but then went to crocheting. I might try it again.
The book looks like an intriguing one. Share a little more about it again.
My Girl was such a cute show; I haven't seen it for many years. I must see it again.
Always love your corner of my kingdom photos.
I reading in Mosiah right now too and trying to journal some thoughts.
    Sending love and hugs!
