Five more things about me ...
(Mary Engelbreit Art)
Yep, it's another five things about me post! I hope that you enjoy reading these as much as I enjoy writing them!
I hate having my photo taken. I've always hated having my photo taken. I have never thought I was very attractive and I have never thought I was very photogenic! This has gotten worse since I have gotten older and . . . ahem . . . larger. As a consequence of this there are very few photographs of me. I have almost none of me with my children. This is largely due to the fact that I was normally the one taking the photos. Nothing has changed. I am also still the one taking the photos. I do force myself to allow a photo every now and again however. My maternal Grandmother never liked having her photo taken either and there are almost no photographs of her. As her granddaughter I wish that there were, and so upon remembering that fact I do allow a photo of me every once in a while, just for my posterity's sake. ☺
I don't have nice feet. They are short and they are wide. I have bad bunions on each foot. I have had bunions since I was a girl. When I was 22 I was told that they needed to be operated on and removed or I would not be able to walk when I got old, but I was pregnant for my youngest daughter at the time. I never ever got around to it. I am old and I am still walking. My bunions don't bother me half as much as the arthritis does. You cannot cut out arthritis like you can a bunion.
I have never had a manicure or a pedicure. I've always secretly wanted to get a manicure, but it has always seemed like such an extravagance, and so I have never had one. I secretly admire women's pretty finger nails. Dainty and so elegant. I did book an appointment to go and get fake fingernails (or whatever it is they call them these days) prior to my daughters wedding, but then I canceled it at the last moment. I was afraid that I would ruin the nails I have and that I would not be able to afford the expense of keeping it up. I am glad that I didn't go through with it. I have heard so many people say since then that their nails were ruined. I used to bite my fingernails at one time. I don't anymore. I haven't done so in years. When Todd and I met, I had nice long fingernails. I cut them all off when I started cooking for a living. Long finger nails and cooking don't mix that well. They are not very hygienic.

I believe in Happily Ever After. Seriously when I was a child I believed in fairy tale endings and frogs turning into princes and fairies into queens. I thought that when Princess Diana got married to Prince Charles it was like a dream come true. I still believe in Happily Ever After even though they did not find theirs. It took me three tries but I did find mine. I know when I'm lucky. I count my blessings. My cup does runneth over, and I know it.
I have always (since puberty) had a problem with facial hair. Not quite as bad as this picture, even though some days it feels like it! I can remember in Grade 11 a girl on the bus announcing to everyone on the bus that I had a mustache in a very loud voice. My sister was sitting next to me and she then announced that this girl had a very big mouth, also in a very loud voice. (She's always had my back. Thanks sis!) The girl's name was Colleen Stewart. I will never forget it. That was an extremely humiliating experience. I have tried dying it and bleaching it. A blond mustache is still a mustache. I had an upper lip for years that smelled like rotten eggs. (Thank you Neet!) Now I wax. I've never been able to afford electrolysis. I am not sure I believe in any type of permanent solution anyways. My mother's been having electrolysis for years. I would like to find Colleen Stewart now and let her know I now have a beard to go with the mustache, along with peach fuzz cheeks. Getting old . . . yes, it's got many a down side, and excess facial hair is one of them. Sigh . . .
And there you have it five new things about me. Hope I made you smile. I know I made me smile. ☺
A thought to carry with you through today . . .

There's two things cooking in The English Kitchen today . . . butterscotch pudding from scratch (so good!) and . . .
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. These are just wonderful! Best ones ever! You can find both recipes here.
Have a wonderful Thursday!!

Darling girl when I had my ovarian tumour removed I was sent into instant menopause. My son has told me I have bigger beard than his! I am forever waxing, tweezing and thinking horrible thoughts about stupid hormones and the lack of them. Hugs. Plus I have quite a patch of neck hair and was born with it. Waxing that leaves hideous bruising.
ReplyDeleteSuzan, in heaven there will be no facial hair. I live in hope! lol
ReplyDeleteI think that won't be a worry. Can we make a date for heaven? I have one with dad. We will be fit and strong and he has never had strong legs due to having polio as a child and we planned to ski together. It may not be God's plan but it was fun to dream a little.
ReplyDeleteI like to think that beauty comes from the inside out . We all have our little imperfections and now that I'm older I realize more and more. Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteOpps! I just realized it is Thursday, not Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteYes, you certainly made me smile this morning. I have an aunt with the same aversion to having her picture taken, at least she used to most of the time I have loved her. She has Alzheimer's now and that has changed her personality. When the family started popping her photo up on FB and I saw her smiling and happy face, that was when I understood the depths of change the illness had wrought. Now she pays no attention to the camera and her great big grins belie the changes. We will be happy to have these photos some day soon.
ReplyDeleteHAAAAAA! Love the bit about what you would like to tell Colleen Stewart now! Thanks for the laugh this early morning! :-D Everything you stated in your 5 more thing list is also so true about me! Except for the bunions. Ouch! Have a wonderful day/night Marie! Keep smiling! xo
ReplyDeleteI am the photographer LOL..Don't put me in front of a camera..Especially the last 4 years.
ReplyDeleteOnce in a blue moon on a holiday my daughter has taken a back or front photo I have liked,,you can be sure I printed them..
Names like Colleen Stewart stay with us.
I remember names too..
Like when i was on the swim team and a boy yelled tidal wave when i dove in:(
Met him..years and years later..the physiques had changed..
I don't remember telling him that.
I have wide feet too and a high arch..not the prettiest feet either.
I received a manicure as a gift for my birthday..it did feel nice..but 3 days later it was chipped etc..you can't have your hands in the garden and water..and pay for manis..
I do my own..
much more reasonable ...
Marie you have a great smile..let them take pics!
You're on Suzan. It's a heaven date! My won't we be having a good time! Yipee!
ReplyDeleteThat's okay Pam, the weeks whiz by so quickly it often feels like Wednesday when its Thursday! And you are right about getting wiser as we get older. I wouldn't want to be young again unless I could take the knowledge I have now with me!
Maybe she has become more childlike Colleen? It's possible. I don't think I minded having my photograph taken when I was a younger child, it happened around puberty that I began to hate having them taking and became more self conscious!
Haha Valerie, I knew we had a lot in common, but this proves it! Except for the bunions. I owe you an e-mail! Look for one soon!
Monique, my heart breaks to think that anyone was ever cruel to you. You are one of the dearest, gentlest, sweetest people I know. Shame on him. I think though sometimes these things help to shape us into better people in many ways. Shame on him still though! xxoo
You know, other than the bunions, I thought you were writing this blog about me. Didn't know you had a twin, did you? Love your blog, Marie!
ReplyDeleteYou know what Marsha? We all think we are alone in these things, but as time goes by I am beginning to learn that most of our experiences are shared ones. There is always, always someone who can empathize, and even if they can't empathize, they can certainly sympathize! Sharing is great. Thank you so much for your kind words! xx
ReplyDeletePedicures are definitely my favorite form of Mommy pampering, but I've only had a few. I do a pretty darn awesome manicure though, if I do say so myself! I'll give you one when we come visit! I had fake nails once, it was a gift from a friend when I was 18, I loved them then but it took years and years for my nails to recover, and I think they'd just be in the way now. I hate pictures of myself too, these days. Aren't we all our own worst critics? I love seeing pictures of you have such a fabulous smile and I just want to hug you! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Marie, just catching up on your recent blogs. Have been so busy preparing for my partners sons wedding on Sunday. He and his fiancée live in London but the weddings on the Wirral so we've been running round like lunatics! Anyway I too have got a bunion, on my left foot, and it's such a pain when getting new shoes. My mum had them on both feet and my sister does too, but she had the operation 12 months ago on both her feet but it took ages to recover. I hope you get your thumb sorted soon, it's so vital to you with all your craft and baking ventures. Much love xxx
ReplyDeleteI have missed reading your posts; you are favorite of mine and I think you know that.
ReplyDeleteI loved finding out more about you.
My mother took tons of pictures through the years and everyone would make fun of her. Now that she is gone we are all glad that she took the pictures.
Meanwhile, I have become just like her. I loved to take pictures. I try to make sure that there is at least one of me in them when we have a family event. If you aren't in the pictures no one will now that you were there.
I do think you need to have a pedicure at least once. I go because they have a massage chair that relaxes me.
I had my nails done years ago and it did ruin them a little bit. Either that is due to having them done or I am just getting old.
I have facial hair too and I have to shave my chin and mustache everyday. I hate it; but I think we just deal with it. I used to be made fun of because of hairy toes. I started to shave them and continue to shave my toes and legs every day. Maybe I am a little OCD.
I too love fairly tale endings. I wish more of the movies today had better endings.
I love this one Marie and I will pop back in and read a few of those I missed.
Blessings, love and hugs for you!
Thanks for the yummy looking recipes too.
April, I don't know what it is. Men don't seem to have any problem with having their photos taken at all! But then again they seem to have a much better perspective on themselves than we do. They never see what the mirror shows and we see an exaggeration of what the mirror shows!
ReplyDeleteKate, good luck with the wedding! Hope it all goes off well. Shoe buying is a nightmare, which is why I am still wearing the same pair of shoes that I bought about 8 years ago now. They are wearing out and I need to find a new pair fast!
LeAnn, I love you! You are just such a dear sweet friend. I have gotten way behind in my blog reading as well. It's time to catch up! Movies today are really hard to watch. WE find ourselves watching more and more older films and television shows rather than what is presented today. xxoo
