A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY, October 14th, 2025

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

This picture was taken exactly a year ago to the day.  Look at how green the grass was. It had been raining obviously. Everything is so brown now. I looked at a map of the dry conditions yesterday and it was more than dire. We had that one day of steady rain, but that is all we have had basically since May. Three rainy days are expected beginning tomorrow though. so we live in hope!

I AM THINKING ...

I've been feeling a bit low lately. I am not sure why. I suppose everyone has these moments. I have struggled to feel motivated to do much of anything. I cannot put a finger on why. It's my favorite season of the year. I really have nothing to feel down about. I just keep hoping it will pass.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

It will soon be Halloween.  I got in some bags of hard candy from the Dollarama, eyeballs, etc. I am wondering if I should get something else as well?  It is hard to know. I don't want to end up with a whole whack of leftover candy or potato chips. I don't even want potato chips in my home, to be honest. I can't leave them alone when they are in my house. They are one of my weaknesses, amongst many, that I cannot be trusted around.

Cider Glazed Chicken Thighs

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Cider Glazed Chicken Thighs.  Boneless, skinless chicken thighs, sizzling with a delicious blend of herbs and spices, and then glazed with a rich apple-cider-dijon reduction? Yes, please!  These were fabulous!

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

Chicken and Rice with Mushrooms. From Easy Weeknight Recipes. This looks fabulous.

THIS I BELIEVE ...

Our lives are a balance of the two, joy and woe. One cannot exist without the other. Joy on the heels of woe is a beautiful thing and made even more so because of woe. If all we ever knew was Joy, we would very much take it for granted I think.

SOMETHING THAT IS NICE ...

A role in life which has brought me intense joy. Home is where I am the happiest.

SOMETHING ELSE THAT IS NICE ...

Pie. I love pie.

SOMETHING I ENJOY ...

SOMETHING ELSE THAT I ENJOY ...

Small bites. This looks like roasted sprouts topped with a bit of blue cheese and bacon. Yummy!

OH MY GOODNESS ...

Mine are not cuddlers. I wish that they were sometimes.

I AM READING ...

LIFE'S LESSONS LEARNED, BY Dallin H Oaks

President Dallin H. Oaks shares personal reflections in this riveting new book, recounting experiences that helped shape his life and pointing out the lessons he has learned. The book is divided chronologically into three major sections: childhood and youth, his years as BYU president and a justice of the Utah Supreme Court, and his service in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. Elder Oaks speaks in a warm and candid way about such poignant experiences as being raised by a widowed mother, losing his wife to cancer, and making the transition to full-time Church service as a General Authority. The conclusions he draws illuminate major principles of the gospel in a universal and meaningful way.

He will probably be the next Prophet/President of my church. I thought it would be good to read some of what he has written.  This is actually very enjoyable and not in the least bit dry.  I met him in person when I was living in the U.K.

  2. Balancing joy and woe is a trick we all need to learn, it is hard. Nice to see Canada Post around today, but who knows for how long. It is a lovely autumn day, we desperately need rain too. Con crops are not nearly as high as usual and already turning brown, don't think any corn grew on them (this is used for cow corn) I'll find some jobs to do today to make the day go faster. Hope you have a good day.

    1. I have yet to check my mail. I guess I better do so, just in case I got some! The corn crops were abysmal here this year and the apples are much smaller! xoxo

  4. Some days for sure, we have to hunt hard to for reasons to feel ok. Been having anxious days myself...for oh so many reasons. I think some of it, it getting older and feeling more vulnerable...esp. with all going on here. And let's face it...in our lifetime, rarely has there not been some conflict or another going on...all of which are hard and sad...and now with media as it is, we know about it instantly. So sending you hugs...and hoping you feel better soon. That yummy food you make is something to rejoice over!!

    1. You and your hubby have been on my mind and in my prayers Elizabeth. I do wish I lived closer and could help out. Praying is what I do best though, and I believe God answers them always in one way or another! Hugs, xoxo

    2. Prayers are the best thing anyone can do, Marie...thank you so much!! Today he has done SLIGHTLY better with moving when needed...so grateful for that. Tomorrow son and I take him for a laser treatment on the leg at our doc...SO GRATEFUL for that option...it has surely helped in lesser ways so we have hope for this. Doc wrote me the other day that it is known to make bones heal 10 times faster and that would be a miracle wouldn't it?
      HUGS, Elizabeth xoxo
