All Things Nice . . .

I like a house wide-windowed to the sun --
You know the kind that seem to have a glow --
Flowers along the edges of the yard,
Old trees with spreading branches wide and low,
A bordered walk with pinks and Queen Anne lace,
Daisies and pansies about the place.

I'd like a house to have a homey look,
Kind of old-fashioned (not too stiff and new),
A house where birth and death have often been,
Old walls that whisper in the dusk to you,
Stairs worn with feet, and door-sills sagged a bit,
Rooms that look cozy when the lamp is lit.

For there is more to home than walls and floors;
There is the spirit of the people there,
Intangible, unseen, but always felt,
Brooding upon the hallways and the stair;
The hidden thoughts, breathed out and given wings
To hover over all these household things.

And so I want my home to breathe of peace,
Of quiet, sunny hours all gladly spent;
Life at its precious best, with naught of ill,
Bird-song and eventide and sweet content,
Where tired folk can lay their burdens down
Under its kindly shadow still and brown.
Edna Jacques, A Dream House
My Kitchen Window, 1935

Ahhhh . . . a dream house. When I was a much younger woman I used to manifest my dream house. I had a binder which I kept filled with clippings of houses I liked, rooms I liked, etc.  On the cover was the photo and a floor plan of the house I wanted to have one day.  I spent a lot of time day-dreaming about this place of my imaginations.

I still do dream of such a place from time to time, but with age I have come to realize that a dream home is more about the people and the feelings of love, warmth, welcome,  and family that reside within its walls, rather than a particular decor or style.

I have been to and visited castles and grand mansions, places filled with antiquities and surrounded by beautiful gardens, and I have felt the lack of heart and warmth within the walls.  Pretty to look at, but there is no soul . . .  no heartbeat within . . . nothing cozy to invite you in and bathe you with a welcome home and a spirit of peace and tranquility.

I love my little home, humble as it is . . . and I hope that it beckons those outside to come in with a feeling of  warmth and welcome.  I hope that they feel my heart beat and soul within it's walls. And that a spirit of love pervades . . .  that it is as much a sanctuary of peace to those who visit as it is for me who lives within its walls.

I had a really lovely visit with Eileen.  I picked her up and we decided to go out for a delicious late lunch/early supper before we did anything else. She had  not eaten yet, nor had I.  Usually I go out on Wednesday nights with my dad, but I had not done so this week and so we went out to lunch to the place we normally go.  I snapped a photo of her burger. There was plenty of fixings on it this time. I wonder if they are running out of things when we end up there at supper time and if it is not better to go at lunch?

I had a turkey dinner and it was lovely.  I also took note of the fish and chips that went past and it looked great as well.

We both enjoyed our lunches very much and had a good old gab and a catch up.  It was nice. I treated her to a dish of ice cream at the end. She doesn't get to eat out very much and I wanted her to feel like it was a real treat to be there together.

Afterwards we took a trip down country and up the mountain to visit my mom's grave. The flowers are no longer blooming in front of the stone, but Eileen loved seeing it and we paid our respects to some of our other relatives that are there in their final resting spots.

We then came back to the house and she settled in. We had a really lovely time together.  We chatted and shared and played with the cats.  It was just plain nice.

Of course I was not hungry for any supper, but I made up a little picky plate for her to enjoy in the early evening.  Just some veggies and dip, some grapes, crackers, a good cheese.  Something else she never gets to enjoy at home. She and Tim have a very limited budget as they basically live on disability pensions and I wanted her to have something she never normally gets, but also something which was somewhat healthy.

We talked, we laughed, we cried. We just enjoyed being together.

I made her a fun breakfast in the morning.  A cup of the green tea that she loves and three cheeky little donuts, decorated to look like a face.  She had a good laugh at that.  Also some fruit juice which isn't shown and some mandarin orange slices.   She thought it was quite fun and that is how it should be.

I woke up with vertigo yesterday morning so I really couldn't do much else.  It slowly went off as the day progressed, but when it was breakfast time it was still bothering me quite a bit, so simple was the order of the day. She did not mind in the least. The best part was getting to spend the time together.

I love my daughter very much. Getting to spend this one on one time with her was really special and something we both enjoyed a lot.  I hope that we will get to enjoy many more such opportunities.  We are both blessed by them.

It is hard to believe that here we are at the end of August already. It seems to have crept up on us all of a suddenly.  This is the last weekend before the children all go back to school.  My daughter was telling me that my youngest grandson is starting school this year.  It is such an exciting time for him.  It is a bit heart breaking that I have yet to see him or spend any time with him in person, but I have just had to accept that will probably never be. One just has to learn to accept things in life that are out of our control and hope for better times to come. At night, in bed,  I pray for each of my grandchildren by name, and this week's prayers have been filled with a Grandmother's prayer that they will each have a good school year ahead.  Filled with hope and with promise. That they will be safe and healthy and happy.  That they will learn and grow in positive ways.

It will be something completely new for Jonathan and Gabriel as they start at college and uni. New milestones in their lives. Exciting. The first steps in what I hope and pray will be very promising futures.

Sing
sing a song
sing out loud
sing out strong

Sing of good things
not bad
sing out happy
not sad . . .

Eileen and I were singing this song together when she was here.  It is a song from her childhood and one which we both remembered being sung on the Muppets show.  Singing is such a beautiful way to express yourself.  I have always loved to sing.  When the children were growing up I would have singing mornings where I sang everything to them, beginning with "Its time to get up." (They probably hated that, but I didn't. Hopefully now they remember them with fondness of a mother who clearly loved them enough to sing to them.)

I was saddened this week to read that Women in Iran are banned from singing. Apparently it has been so for a very long time.

The Islamic Republic prohibits women from singing or dancing in public, reflecting a broader repression against women's rights. These moves, enforced since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, are rooted in conservative interpretations of Islamic law that deem the female singing voice provocative and sexually suggestive.

Admittedly in these modern times there are some women who sing in a very provocative manner and with very provocative lyrics.  But it made me feel sad to think that We live in a world where in some places women are denied such a beautiful method of expression.  When I think of music and the hymns I love so much to  listen to,  and love to sing, praises to my God . . . songs of joy and songs of love.

It seems criminal that some women in this world are denied even this most basic form of expression. Singing  and love of music are natural to each of us, and whether we are good at it or bad at it, matters not.  We should all have the right to express and enjoy this gift from God. The gift of music.  I cannot get my mind around a religion which forbids such a thing.

This is not the intent of God.  "Men (women) are that they might have joy." 2 Nephi 2:25

Fundamentalism in any way shape or form, especially within the confounds of religion, is not something I can get my head around anyways.  And Religion and Government should always be separate in my opinion. It makes me very grateful that I live and have always lived where I did and I do.

Are we not very blessed?  I think so.

I find the beauty of the earth and all that has been created magical and astonishing. This simple flower for instance, with its bordering petals and then that beautiful stamen in the center.  A wonder of creation.  And it does not stop there.  When you think of all of the flowers ever created on this beautiful earth and their uniqueness and beauty  . . .  so amazing . . .

And how everything on our planet is interdependent on each other.  All of the flora and fauna, the insects, the animals, etc. From the smallest grain of sand to the snow covered mountain tops.

We are surrounded by miracles. I am grateful for eyes and a heart that seeks them out and finds them.  That recognizes them and appreciates them.

I found this and I thought how very wonderful.  I think the happiest of people know how to have a lovely day.  And it doesn't really matter what circumstances you find yourself in or that you are required to live in. We can all have a lovely day.  It is a matter of making choices within the confines of our reality.  Even in the most humble of circumstances it is possible to have a lovely day.

I am grateful that I have never truly been homeless, or had to live in a country torn apart by war. Or never really have had to truly be in want.  How grateful I am that this is so. Perhaps it would be harder in those circumstances to be able to make lovely choices. And I hope that I never find myself having to endure such things.  There but for the Grace of God go I.    I am, however, very grateful for the life that I have been given, and I pray I always will be able to find gratitude in my days and to make them lovely days.

I am running out of time now and must be on and about my day so I will leave you with a thought to carry with you  . . .

Chicken Sauteed with Cheese & Milk

In The English Kitchen  . . .  today, a delicious dish of Chicken Sauteed with Cheese & Milk Such a simple thing but incredibly tasty.  I fried some sage leaves to garnish the top of the chicken.  This is a delicious protein stretcher that turns something simple into something fabulous. Simple ingredients done well.

I hope that you have a beautiful weekend. It is a long weekend here and in most Western nations.  Labor Day Weekend.  Summer's last long weekend holiday.  The last celebration before school begins.  Whatever you get up to be happy and safe and enjoy!  Don't forget!

My Favorite Things . . .

These are some of the things in life that I enjoy and which make me happy, inspire me, or put a smile on my face. Maybe some of them are yours too.  Lets share!

Buttons. I love buttons. One of my favorite things to do when I was a child was to play in my mother's button box.

Small stones, rocks, etc.  These are particularly pretty. My friend Jacquie gave me some stones from Israel a few weeks back.

Honey. It is a rare treat for me.  I don't eat it very often because it sends my blood sugars through the roof.  But I do love it  . . .

Fairy circles  . . . . so mysterious and full of wonder  . . .

Perfume bottles  . . .

Flower jewelry  . . .  so pretty  . . .

Violets  . . . .  so pretty  . . .

What a cute breakfast set  . . .  love the egg cup. I love egg cups.

Mrs Tiggy-winkle  . . .

There is nothing about this that doesn't make my heart go pitty pat.  Polka dots.  Stripes. Flowers. Pink . . .

Hearts and roses  . . .  pastels  . . .

Pretty plates  . . .

Gold lockets  . . .

Embroidered linens  . . .

Cameos  . . .

Lighthouses  . . .

Owls  . . .  creepy and yet beautiful at the same time  . . .

Ribbon flats  . . .

Birds and pom poms  . . .

Dandelions  . . .  embroidery  . . .  pillows  . . .

And those are my favorite things for this week. I hope some of them were yours as well!

Easy Prime Rib for two

In The English Kitchen today  . . .  Easy Prime Rib for Two.  Delicious. I had to clean out my freezer and needed to use this up.  It was a rare treat! Prime Rib is another one of my favorite things  . . .

I will probably not be posting tomorrow morning as Eileen will be here and I will be spending the time with her. I will catch you back here on Saturday morning. In the meantime I hope that you have a couple of really lovely days!  Whatever you get up to stay safe, be blessed, and don't forget!

Wednesday Witterings . . .

Lets start off with a little bit of good news here this  morning.  I am now signed up for a Family Doctor.  The surgery called me yesterday to set up an appointment with the Nurse on the 18th of September and I will be assigned a Doctor on that day.  It has only taken four years, but what a blessing to finally be within sight of having some continuity when it comes to health care. This is huge.

I was supposed to have blood tests done in August, but I have been unable to book them.  I kept trying and they were all booked up so told to try again.  Same story, all booked up, and now the site for booking shuts down immediately and won't open up.  I am not sure what the problem is.  I will keep trying.

My DIL has been posting lovely photos on FB of their boys, the three "J's" enjoying their last days of summer.  They have been going to the butterfly place and quite a few other activities.  It all looks like fun.  I love that they are able to do these things with the boys and that the boys, even Jon who is 18, enjoy going.

Next week their school years will begin, with Jon going off to college and Gabe, UNB.  I think Josh is in grade 11 and both Jake and Luke are in grade 9.   I am not sure about the other three grandchildren.  I expect the youngest will be in pre-kindergarten now and the others will be in grad 6 and grade 8. Those are the ones I never hear from.

This grandmother prays for all of her grandchildren every night by name.  I have them covered with my heart and my prayers.

I was watching a girl in Russia going Grocery shopping in Siberia last night on YouTube.  The super market was huge and quite interesting.  They have many of the same brands as we do. Oreo Cookies, Heinz Ketchup.  But also quite a few different things as well.  I have always loved to go grocery shopping in foreign countries.  I am very much a food tourist. She went to a butcher place and a fruit/veg market to get fresh meat and fruits. Apparently they grow all of their own vegetables.  The meat was quite different.  She bought these smoked sausages and something which she called ham, but it looked like bologna. She did say it was for use in sandwiches and was not very healthy. (Sounds like bologna to me.) She got a big chunk of beef which she was going to grind into hamburger and a couple of pieces of cured pork belly that looks quite interesting as well.

I had always been of the understanding that in Russia there were huge lines for everything, but I saw no evidence of this.

I went out to check my mail yesterday and met Glenna who was on her way back from the Compost bins. She said there was going to be a neighborhood watch meeting at the firehall last night, apparently to address the vandalism which has been going on in town.  Its been quite bad.  A week or so ago someone flipped over all of the flower bins and emptied them out and went to the car dealership and slashed a lot of the tires on the vehicles. It is criminal.

This town has a bad reputation really. It used to be such a nice place to live, with lots of lovely older homes, etc. I always called it a Leave it to Beaver town. But nowadays it is a place here a lot of drug addicts live so that they can get their meds, and the probation office is here, so we have a lot of people released from prison here. Not saying that these people are responsible for any of this, but there is also a large bunch of homeless people and some pretty wild teens.

You also never see the police. Never.  There is an office for them at the town hall, but the RCMP run it and you just never see them.

My ex husband used to do policing in the town when we first moved back here after he retired from the Military. Then it all got handed over to the RCMP and it has gone downhill ever since.

I am grateful that I have my garage to lock my car up in every night. I am sure that they will catch whoever did the criminal damage at some point. Someone will open their mouth and it will get out. Secrets like that don't stay secret for very long.

I slept terrible last night. At 3 a.m. I still had not fallen asleep.  I just sleep surfed all night. I finally got up at 7 because I could hear poor Nutmeg crying for his breakfast like he was starving to death.  haha  That is not very likely. He always polishes off all of his and half of his sister's. I suppose we all occasionally have nights like that. My problem is indigestion.  I had eaten a late supper of a bowl of raisin bran about 7 PM and it was probably too late to be eating that kind of fiber. Usually I don't eat anything at all after 7 and I am very careful about what I eat later in the day anyways.  I try not to eat anything with onions, or garlic, or tomatoes, or chocolate.  That's why I eat my main meal much earlier in the day.

I don't think I ate much of anything yesterday.  I had a bite of the ham and egg thing that I made earlier in the day,  and I had some carrot sticks with dip  about 4, and then the bowl of raisin bran. It was just not a good eating day for me yesterday.

What a comfy looking chair.

I did two recipes yesterday and did up two loads of laundry. Today I am planning on doing a video as well as dusting, vacuuming and washing the floors. We will see how that goes. It is also the day I usually go out for supper with my father.  I am not sure about that. I am picking up Eileen to come and spend the night tomorrow, and so I told her I would take her out for supper as a treat as well. So I am not sure if I can afford all of that eating out.  I don't want to disappoint her and I don't want to disappoint my father either.  Its a bit of a conundrum.

I had a facetime with my oldest son early in the day yesterday.  His sister in law just left to go to Switzerland with her family where she is beginning her new career as the new IOC medical and scientific director.  (International Olympic Committee.)  She is an Olympic Gold medalist, having won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, and was a world champion before that.  She is quite accomplished actually, and we wish her much luck in her new position.

I can hear them out there mowing our lawns this morning and I can smell the newly cut grass. I love that smell.  My day is getting away from me now. It is amazing how much having a late start to your day can throw your timing off.  I am grateful that I live in a place where they do these things for me, but there is still much that I need to do for myself and one of those things is work and so I am going to end here with a thought for the day. Not a very lengthy post this morning unfortunately, but I know you won't mind.

Cheesy Ham & Egg in a Hole

In The English Kitchen today. Cheesy Ham & Egg in a Hole.  This simple bake would make a great breakfast for when you are entertaining, or a lovely light supper. You decide.

A Day Book . . .

FOR TODAY,  August 27th, 2024

OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ...

I captured this little moth just sitting there yesterday.  I thought it was quite interesting.  My phone camera is so amazing. I would never have been able to capture a photo like that with my old camera.  I found this quite fascinating. And it was literally just the other side of my living room window.

It is another really foggy morning again this morning, but a mostly sunny day is predicted, with a bit of a cooling trend, which is not unwelcome. I like cooler.

I AM THINKING ...

There is a person who periodically leaves comments on the blog that is  outrageously ridiculous.  All they do is write DIE about fifty times.  That's it.  Just that word over and over again.  I am not sure what the motivation is, or what they hope to gain from it.  And of course it is all done under the cloak of anonymity because they are such a brave person that they can't stand behind their sentiments like a person who is proud of their actions. One has to wonder what is wrong with a person  like that.  I believe they are mentally ill.  Only someone who is mentally ill would behave in such a way.  Please pray for them.  They are in need of help.

I AM ALSO THINKING ...

This photo reminded me of a talk by Elder Jeffrey R Holland from a number of years back. It was entitled Songs Sung and Unsung.  It is one of my favorite talks that he has given. It is all about the realities we face in a fallen world and how some days it can be very hard to find a song to sing. How sometimes life can rob us of the song we want to sing, and how to cope with that situation.  I love that talk. Who has not been there. Sad, sorrowful days come to each of us.

"Remember it is by divine design that not all the voices in God’s choir are the same. It takes variety—sopranos and altos, baritones and basses—to make rich music. To borrow a line quoted in the cheery correspondence of two remarkable Latter-day Saint women, “All God’s critters got a place in the choir.”

There is room for each of us in the choir, even when the song we have to sing is sung under the most difficult of circumstances. He, hears us all and loves to hear our voices raised unto Him, even if our song is naught more than an unspoken prayer for deliverance.

Lunch Lady Brownies

IN THE KITCHEN ...

Today it is a small batch of Lunch Lady Brownies. I have always wanted to try that recipe. I have a weakness for Brownies.  These are very good.  I can see now why they are so popular.  The recipe makes only an 8-inch square pan, which is plenty.

ON MY "TO COOK" LIST ...

Diethood.  Skillet Zucchini and Mushrooms.  This looks really good.  I love both of those things and this looks really delicious. What a wonderful side!

LOOKING FORWARD TO ...

Autumn days.  They are just around the corner.  Autumn is my favorite season of the year, and I love Octobers most of all.

Also Eileen is coming to stay overnight with me on Thursday as Tim is going camping, so I am looking forward to that as well. It will be fun.

REMEMBERING ...

When we lived on the farm in Meaford.  There was a farm across the road that grew fields of sunflowers. They were so pretty.  I took a photograph of my daughter Amanda and her friends in them. I don't know what ever happened to that photograph. Anyways, this time of year it was a field filled with beautiful sunny colors and delight!

SOMETHING NICE ...

I had a facetime first thing this morning with my oldest son. It is always good to speak with my two sons who live away from here.  He is thinking they will come over for Thanksgiving, so that is indeed something to look forward to.

I KNOW THIS TO BE TRUE ...

I feel a sense of truth here.  We are part of an eternal round.

I AM WANTING TO CREATE ...

I love these fabric characters of Calico and Stitch.

Pretty Fabric and Trims. Block of the month club.  Love this idea. Beyond my affordability.

A Button Sampler.

Elefantz on Etsy.  Love this.

Love these primitives . . .  wish my eyes still allowed me to do such fine work.

OH MY GOODNESS ...

Such cute ricrac!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE ...

Such pretty red hair.

MAKES ME HAPPY ...

This sweet family photo of my son Doug and his family. They have been having a great summer filled with lots of fun activities for the boys. No comments about the long hair. They like their hair and are not confused in the least about who they are.

I AM READING ...

BORROWED LIGHT, by Carla Kelly

Our heroine, Julia Darling, is a 27 year old cooking school graduate, who breaks her engagement to the "perfect" man, and leaves Salt Lake City to work as a ranch cook in the wilds of Wyoming. The man who hires her, Paul Otto, is a well-known and highly respected rancher with a somewhat enigmatic past, who has built his life around the idea (from a scripture that he can't identify) that we are all beggars in one way or another. Accordingly, he has collected a motley assortment of ranch hands, including an orphaned child, an alcoholic doctor, and a young Irish drifter.

This book is somewhat different from Ms. Kelly's usual work; it's more like an Inspirational romance with an LDS (as opposed to evangelical) flavor. For those not familiar with the genre, these are romances written from a Christian perspective. The faith element is considered central to the story, and to the personal growth of characters.

I loved this book the first, second and third time I read it. Yes, I am reading it for a fourth time. I have read the whole series, which consists of three novels. All very good. Clean. Inspiring. Entertaining.  I highly recommend.

THINGS I LOVE ...

Red and white  . . .

Pretty, pretty, pretty  . . .

Pom Pom Flowers . . .

A comfy chair and ottoman  . . .

Shortbread cookies  . . .  so sweet cut out like teapots.

MAKES ME SMILE ...

Those toe hairs peeking out from between the toe beans  . . .

SOMETHING TO WATCH ...

The American on Prime. Very good.
