The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, May 18th, 2021

Outside my window ...
The sun is shining. There is not a cloud in the sky. All is right in my little corner of the world.

I am thinking ...
My television should have arrived yesterday. It did not. I waited all day until 8pm when I got the message that it might arrive today or tomorrow, but if it doesn't arrive by tomorrow then I can check back the day after and apply for a refund. Not promising.  And I have an engineer arriving either today or tomorrow to hook it up. DUH! I had written the appointment down on a piece of paper I can no longer find. Double DUH! Things will work out, things will work out, things will work out  . . .

I am thankful for ...
I had a chipmunk visit me last night. He was so cute. I need to go get some peanuts!

In the kitchen ...

Cantonese Chicken Chop Suey for two. Delicious! Quick and easy too.  Eat a rainbow!

On my "to Cook" list ...

Everyday Delicious. Polish Kopytka Potato Dumplings.  I adore dumplings.

One of my favorite things ...

Love the new carpet. It is me!  I need to straighten it I think, but maybe next time my sister comes over she can help me. I also need to get some pictures hung and my curtains made. Things are shaping up.

I am wanting to create ...

Doug sent me some pencils and a sketching pad for Mother's Day. I did this sketch of a sparrow yesterday. It was just practice.

Purl Soho.  Cook's potholders.

Martha Stewart, Knit Potholders  . . .

All Free Knitting.  Linen Stitch hand towels. Love these.

All Free Knitting.  Traditional Garter Stitch dishcloth. I've been looking for this pattern.

I am reading ...

The Daring Ladies of Lowell, by Kate Alcott

From the New York Times bestselling author of THE DRESSMAKER comes a moving historical novel about a bold young woman drawn to the looms of Lowell, Massachusetts--and to the one man with whom she has no business falling in love.

Eager to escape life on her family’s farm, Alice Barrow moves to Lowell in 1832 and throws herself into the hard work demanded of “the mill girls.” In spite of the long hours, she discovers a vibrant new life and a true friend—a saucy, strong-willed girl name Lovey Cornell.

But conditions at the factory become increasingly dangerous, and Alice finds the courage to represent the workers and their grievances. Although mill owner, Hiram Fiske, pays no heed, Alice attracts the attention of his eldest son, the handsome and reserved Samuel Fiske. Their mutual attraction is intense, tempting Alice to dream of a different future for herself.

This dream is shattered when Lovey is found strangled to death. A sensational trial follows, bringing all the unrest that’s brewing to the surface. Alice finds herself torn between her commitment to the girls in the mill and her blossoming relationship with Samuel.

Based on the actual murder of a mill girl and the subsequent trial in 1833, THE DARING LADIES OF LOWELL brilliantly captures a transitional moment in America’s history while also exploring the complex nature of love, loyalty, and the enduring power of friendship.

So far this is VERY good!  I am really enjoying it!

Looking forward to ...
Seeing what the day brings to my table. Every morning I get to write on a fresh page.

  1. Love your new carpet, brings pops of colour into the room. All sorts of appliances, furniture and tvs are delayed because of covid. Hope your tv arrives soon. Remember good things cone to those that wait, and you are very good at waiting, Enjoy the cute chipmunk.

    1. Thanks so much Mary! The TV did come today, but not without scaring me first. I had a message it had been delivered, but of course it hadn't. So I started messing about trying to find some answers out. (Not easy with Amazon) I finally got a person to talk to and lo and behold the TV was then delivered as I was talking to them. Whew! xoxo

  7. Your sketch is very very good, Marie...I hope you can figure out what all you can do with your artistic abilities...seems you could at the least illustrate books!! (Which a local author told me was where the money was...not in writing books as she did, but in illustrating!!)
