My Favourite Things . . .

 

 

 

These are a few of my favourite things.  Maybe some of them are yours also!  A few of the things which catch my eye, inspire me, pluck at my heart strings, make me smile, intrigue me or that I just plain enjoy. I hope that they will do the same for you.

Todd always says I am a magician.  He sees bags full of groceries coming into the house and he doesn't know where I am going to put everything, but then just like magic, half an hour later, I have managed to find a spot for everything.  I love being able to prove to him that I have a place for everything. Impressing him with my skills to do that is one of my favourite things!  Yesterday I had ordered in some major just in case scenario stuff, like long life shelf stable milk, toilet paper (coz you wouldn't want to run out of that if you were quarantined), oats, flour, oil, sugar, dog food etc. and he said I would never find a place to put it. I found a place for everything and it was all tidy as well. 

 

 

 

 

 

Madame Alexander Dolls. I don't have any in real life, and probably never will, but I have a whole collection of the on Pinterest.  The youngest daughter at the Manor had a whole collection of them for real in her bedroom.  On Wednesdays I had to do the housekeeper's job as well as my own, and tidying her room, making her bed, etc. was one of my duties.  I  loved dusting and looking at her dolls.  They were beautiful.

Travel Documentaries.  I love watching them. You get to see facinating places and people without spending a penny. Michael Portillo does it by train using historical guide books.  Simon Reeves does it on foot for the most part and often exposes the under-belly.  Michael Palin just does it.  Prunella Scales and her husband do it by canal boat.  Those are some of my favourites.  You can find alot of them on YouTube.  We were just watching  Michael Portillo in Calgary last night. It was surprising how much it had changed since I lived there in the late 1970's, but then again one might expect that it would have.

  

 

Children's tea sets.  I always wanted one when I was a girl. I was always wanting to buy one for Maryn.  They have beautiful ones here, but the cost of posting it was always out of my league. Now she's nine there would be no point.  

 

 

 

 

 

The Tale of Peter Rabbit.  I have always loved the story. When I was really small I had a small record which had the story on it and sometimes my mother would play it for me on the record player.  The record was orange in colour and started off with a song. I loved it. 

 

 

  

 

 

 Rings, especially pretty ones.  Whenever we are in Chester, I look in the jewelry shop windows at the rings, Costco too. Just admiring.  I love rings  . . .  

 

 

 

 

 

My mother still had her old High School Home Economics text book.  I used to wear out the pages as a child and every time I went home to visit.  I loved looking at it.  As a child I sadly even coloured in it when I was really small, colouring in the black and white diagrams. Of course I didn't get very far before my mother stopped me. 

 

 

   

 

Denby pottery  . . .  I have four demi-tasse cups in this pattern. They were gifts for  promoting something. I use them for mini-dessert servers when we have dinner guests. (We never have more than two at a time for the most part, guest-wise.) 

 

 

 

 

 

Old black and white photos.  I wonder about the people in them.  What are their stories.  Who were they.  What were their lives like  . . . 

 

 

  

 

 

This poem by William Wordsworth.  Every year since I have been over here I have wanted to go to Lake Ullswater and see the hosts of Daffodils and every year we never get there.  I live in hope  . . . 

 

 

 

  

 

The Fairy Tale Illustrations of Scott Gustaffson.  I started to collect the plate series of them years ago, but only ever got four. Little Red Riding Hood.  The Three Bears.  The Frog Princess. The Three Little Pigs.  There is so much detail in his art. They are realistic but very whimsical at the same time.

 

 

 

Embroidered and monogrammed linens . . .  I always wanted his and hers towels and sheets, etc. 

 

 

  

 

Olives, any colour any kind  . . .   

 

 

 

 

 

Rice Krispies cereal.  I especially like it with sliced banana on it. One of the few ways I will eat a raw banana.  When I was a child I loved to listen to it snap, crackle and pop! 

 

 

  

 

 

Green Jello. They don't have it over here in the UK. No sure why.  Actually you can only get jelly in a few basic flavours. Strawberry. Raspberry.  Lemon. Black Currant.  I am not sure if there are any others.  If there are, I have never seen them. 

 

 

 

 

 

Atlas, Geography and History books, programs, etc.  Those subjects really interest me.  I found History boring in school because it was all dates to memorise, but I love to watch programs about history. At University I took Canadian History and it was fascinating. 

 

 

  

 

Board Games. I love LOVE playing them.  Eileen is bringing over her Clue Game. She already has it packed. I can't wait to play it with her! Todd and I play checkers once a day.  I have yet to beat him.
