The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, July 23, 2019

Outside my window ...
The sun has got her hat on, hip, hip, hip hooray! It will probably be miserably warm by midday, but who cares. A sunny day is a happy day. No rain!
I am thinking ...
About the kindness of others and how so often I am the recipient of it. I am not sure I deserve it most of the time. I hope that I remember to be kind with others in return. I like to think of good deeds and kindnesses as having a ripple effect that spreads. I am reminded of that inspirational thought that says, "In a world where you can be anything you want to be, be kind."   I love that. It is my goal daily to just be kind.

I am thankful for ...
For everything. My life is richly blessed and embroidered with a fullness of joy. My cup runneth over.
One of my favourite things ...
Buttered potatoes and roasted beetroot. In fact that was our supper yesterday. I know  . . . very naughty.  Tina gave me a bag of freshly pulled beetroot and new potatoes from their garden on Sunday and I just had to enjoy some of them yesterday. I roasted all the beetroot, and cooked the greens and boiled some of the potatoes in their skins and that's what we had for our supper. Boiled potatoes with some salt and butter, the beetroot skinned, and of course the greens. It was delicious and very satisfying.
In the kitchen ...
Rich Banana Bread
I baked Todd a delicious Banana Bread the other day.  I used my stick blender to puree the bananas. It worked a charm. This is one very tasty banana bread.
On my "To Cook" list ...
How Sweet Eats.  Pretzel Crusted Chicken Strips with Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce.
Good to know ...
Polished Habit. Good to know that is, good to know.  Haven't tried it yet but I am going to if I can find a Magic Eraser.

I am creating ...
Hook and Bake. Complete Tutorial.  Very pretty squares.
Ideas for DIY. How to make a Kantha Quilt.
Hobium. Free pattern. So sunny and bright!
Meusely. Baby Sock Christmas Ornaments.
The Quilt Rack.  Themed Snowflakes, paper cutting.
Linchainging on IG.  Inspiring.
I am reading ...
Nella Last's War the WW2 Diaries of Housewife 49
Next to being a mother, I'd have loved to write books...' Nella Last, Oct 8, 1939

In September 1939, housewife and mother Nella Last began a diary whose entries, in their regularity, length and quality, have created a record of the Second World War which is powerful, fascinating and unique. When war broke out, Nella's younger son joined the army while the rest of the family tried to adapt to civilian life.

Writing each day for the "Mass Observation" project, Nella, a middle-aged housewife from the bombed town of Barrow, shows what people really felt during this time. This was the period in which she turned 50, saw her children leave home, and reviewed her life and her marriage - which she eventually compares to slavery. Her growing confidence as a result of her war work makes this a moving (though often comic) testimony, which, covering sex, death and fear of invasion, provides a new, unglamorised, female perspective on the war years.

I am looking forward to ...

Lunch with Tina and Tony on Thursday. We always enjoy our time with them.

  2. Lovely things to think about, Marie. Here's a very simple guideline for a happy life - "Eat when you're hungry, but not too much, rest when you're tired but not too long and always, always be kind." That just about covers all the important stuff. Take gentle care. Hugs, Elaine

  3. Your daybook entries are always so fun. I think they are fun to do too.
I'm happy you had a sunny day. Thanks for your Banana Bread recipe; it looks like such a good one. I need to make some to share.
I loved the crochet squares and other DYI projects. I do need to clean the front of my oven too.
The novel looks interesting. I'm still working on a series by Lund on the war times in Germany mixed with a family from the states.
I have several vintage dolls but not in great shape. I just can't throw them a way. There are a couple I need to see if I can rescue them.
I love blue and white plates.
    Mitzie is adorable as always.
Hope you have a great time with your friends.
Sending loving thoughts and hugs your way!
