The art of Moodling . . .

"Develop interest in life as you see it; in people, things, literature, music . . . the world is so rich, simply throbbing with rich treasures, beautiful souls and interesting people. Forget yourself."
~Henry Miller

What would you like to do if you ever had the time to do it? Spending time alone to nurture yourself, develop your own unique creativity, to enjoy personal pursuits that bring you great personal pleasure and contentment can seem on the surface quite impractible, inconceivable and on the surface, quite selfish!

A lot of the time, as women, we are made to feel that if we want to pursue something fun, just for the sake of having fun, then we are over induldging ourselves and neglecting more important things in life. Especially if we have bought in to that misguided feminest idea of having it all, ie. careers, families, etc. The truth is that somewhere over the last twenty years or so, in between having the family and the career, most of us have lost an essential part of who we really are, and feel that something very important in our lives is missing.

I think that missing quality is called "zest" and no, I don't mean the soap here. I mean our "Joi de vivre," our love of life, the heartfelt happiness that comes when we are doing something that gives us deep and keen pleasure. Something that is just for us, and us alone.

I think that once upon a time it used to be called a hobby.

I have heard it called moodling.

moodling - noun
1. puttering
2. dawdling
3. happy idling
4. rewarding reverie

It may have been so long since we have consciously set aside time for our own solitary pleasures, that most of us won't even have an idea of what it is that we could do. Just know that it is more than merely taking a bath, alone, with no distractions, or even a nap. It's completely immersing ourselves into a pursuit that seems totally and utterly like "play." Sewing, needlework, painting, writing, cooking etc. . . . all for the sake of the "pure enjoyment" of doing whatever it is that we enjoy and want to do that is just for us.

I think that today we should, each of us, spend a few minutes dawdling or puttering, being happily idle . . . playing, re-discovering the long last art of moodling, and feeding our "Joi de Vivre." Let's bring back some of the magic that life can and is supposed to hold for each one of us. It's not selfish, it's not self indulgent . . . it's healthy.

Sometimes I think I have too many hobbies!  I've always been super creative. I have fingers in many pies.  I get bored very easily. I am probably a bit adhd.

  1. Morning Marie, I have just had two weeks of ...indulgence ,,,,,Mary's been on holiday and I have as well!!....so it's been filled with reading, I have got through four books since she left LOL...also started a cross stitch but it's much harder than I expected as there is an awful lot of. white in it and the canvas is white, it's so fine it's done with one ply of cotton...I can only do about twenty stitches at a time..before my eyes go...so it's going to take a very long time to do...hope I have the courage to keep going, it dosnt need finishing before next year so I have plenty time...hope you have a good day. It's going to be another very hot one here. But nice and cool.....at the moment......love to Toddxxxx

    1. Oh dear it will be back to the norm now she is back! I have not been able to do cross stitch for a number of years now due to my eyes, but I used to really enjoy it. Even painting is a bit of a problem now at times because of my eyes, but I can still crochet with yarn and knit a bit as I am not very good at that. You have plenty of time to finish your cross stitch. Did you know you can get a magnifier to help with that. It hangs around your neck, I had one I could have given you, but I loaned it to Doreen for reading and she took it to a charity shop! Oh well! Nice that you have enjoyed your "reading" holiday! Love and hugs! xoxo

  2. Like you I have way too many hobbies, things I love to do and have enough projects going I'll probably never get it all done. I truly love what I do whether it is housework, yard work, or painting gifts for my family. I have knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch just waiting to be done too. I like that word, moodling!

  4. I have been indulging in dollhouse miniatures currently. I have always loved miniatures, and I've been creating mini room scenes and miniature pieces by hand. I find it so relaxing. I do a little each evening, after work and dinner and chores are done.

  5. I love the thought of moodling! Thank you for bringing this subject up. I believe like you do we sometimes get lost in our duties and forget to do those things that bring us extra joy.
I do have a few things that I need to get back to that bring me extra feelings of happiness.
Thanks for reminding me! Blessings and hugs for you sweet friend!
