The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .

FOR TODAY, May 24th, 2017

Outside my window ...
The sun is fully up. I am a bit later getting started this morning.  We got back so late yesterday that I wasn't able to do my kitchen post until this morning, so I am way behind on everything.  Traffic yesterday on the M56 was outrageous.  Due to a major incident in Mancester, but not sure why it was affecting traffic as far out as we were.

I am thinking ...
About the major incident in Manchester. A sucide bombing at the end of a pop concert.  Planned to create as much damage as possible.  I don't understand the mentality or inhumanity of such an act.  Children and young people . . . the youngest victim being only 8 years old.  What kind of person can do such a heinous thing. Every time something like this happens our world changes, and not for the better.

In the kitchen ...

Creamy Chive and Cheddar Salad Dressing.  Delicious!

On my "To Cook" list ...

Homemade Biscoff cookies from Kleinworth & Co.  These look gorgeous! I love, LOVE Biscoff!

Good to know ...

 From Pure Wow.

I am creating ...

This lamb scarf is so cute.  From Ravelry.

I could not find a source for this, but if you can crochet it would be simple enough to do.  It's a simple crochet scallop edging around a piece of brushed fleece. I found a free pattern for another style which is also very nice on Ravelry. Free pattern.

Little clay heart attachements for packages.  From Alanka Davis. No instructions, but plenty of inspiration.

Printable Birdhouse from Paper Trey Ink.  Free template for the birdy house.

Little Fabric Houses from Craft and Creativity.

I am reading ...

Everyman's England, by Victor Canning

"I travelled from King's Cross to Berwick-on-Tweed in a sleeper on the night express for no other reason than that I like to read in bed and, at the same time, feel that I am being rushed forward at a tremendous speed."

In this series of pen-portraits of England, commissioned by The Daily Mail in the 1930s, Victor Canning vividly conjures the pattern and colour of the 'great fabric of English Life' from Cumberland to Cornwall. His heartwarming, humorous and often irreverent observations of sleepy villages, pastoral scenes and busy industries provide a delightful insight into life between the wars.

Thoroughly delightful!

I am looking forward to ...

Our Scotland trip and seeing my book in print. It won't be long now!

Dreaming about ...

A beautifully organised pantry . . .

A kitchen island.  This is amazing.  You would  need a HUGE kitchen for it, but that is something I would love also.  A kitchen with plenty of space.

A corner sofa . . .  but in a much darker colour.

A pool to call my own  . . .  of course if I could afford one of these, I could also afford someone to take care of it.

 Better than a pergola  . . .

Something to watch ...

Scott & Bailey.  Britain's version of Cagney and Lacey.  We have the DVD's.  It's great! I love British Crime Dramas.

A favourite quote for the day  ...

Makes me smile ...

 hah!

One of my favourite things ...

I love popcorn, but my teeth don't . . .

Corners of my Kingdom ...

Berwick Upon Tweed . . . more commonly known simply as Berwick (pronounced Berrick) is an Ancient Walled Town at the far Northern reach of the Northumberland Coast. Throughout history this has been an area of intense conflict and the evidence of this remains today is clear, with it's huge fortified Town Walls. In Elizabethan times the Town had huge defensive walls built to deter the potential invasion of the Scots. Berwick changed hands between the English and the Scots an amazing 13 times before finally being re-captured in 1482 by the English, in who's hands it has remained ever since.

Three bridges connect Berwick with Tweedmouth on the South side of the river, the most impressive of which being the railway's 'Royal Border' bridge designed by Robert Stephenson and completed in 1850. Today Berwick is a beautiful Market Town that is immensely popular with visitors. It has many architectural features of note, an incredibly turbulent history to explore, a thriving arts scene and excellent facilities and amenities.

And that's my daybook for this week!

  1. Good morning and much love to all who were killed, injured, or hurt in anyway. How these people can even devise such horrific ways to destroy peace and unsettle huge groups of people? Most religions preach peace, harmony and much more and then we have zealots.

Back to happier things. I have had a quiet day as the muscle aches from Monday's collision have hit. That is about all my day has been.

Once again I am loving so many things that that you have shared. But there is no time for new projects etc as I have to finish baby stuff.

God bless you today and always.

  2. Hi Marie. Glad you and Todd enjoyed your day at the Temple, apart from your journey home.

I'm feeling sad this morning as my daughter, Jen, is so upset by the suicide bombing. She works in Manchester city centre and uses Victoria station every day. On Monday night going home she saw all the young girls at the station heading for the concert and smiled as she remembered what it was like going to your first concert. And yesterday there was some other bomb scare were Market Street was evacuated but there building was on lock down so no one could leave and it was obviously upsetting. Someone was arrested for causing it apparently, thought it would be funny to pretend there was another one. As Victoria station is still closed it is taking a couple of hours on the bus, which is a long time when you don't know what you're heading into. Lots of love xxx

  3. They have arrested three people now, so the government and police are not letting any grass grow beneath their feet. Westminster on lock down and troops being deployed. Scary times, but as we are now on critical alert, it is to be expected. Good will prevail! They will not win. I am sorry your daughter has to feel so afraid and distraught Kate. Have fun with your baby makings Suzan! xoxo

  4. So true acts of violence like that change our world. They don't just affect the people involved but give us all reason to pause.

  6. They sure do Pam. It can sometimes be difficult to stay positive, but we must. Ultimately God is in control so we just have to trust in that. Xoxo

It is Monique! We need to focus more on the good than the bad. Look for the helpers. There are always helpers! I hope you do learn how to crochet! You will be able to create some lovely things! Xoxo
