Wednesday this and that . . .
We had a not so busy day yesterday. It was the first day since the holidays that we got back to the business of simply being. That is one of the best things about retirement. Most days there is nothing pressing against you, you can simply be and do what you like . . .
We did have the rent to pay. With all of the holidays yesterday was the first day Todd could get to the bank. Job done. I did have a few groceries to pick up as well . . .
Anyone who knows me knows I love grocery shopping. I always have done. It must be the hunter gatherer in me, but there is nothing I like more than pushing my cart up and down the aisles and looking at everything . . . choosing this and choosing that. Yes, I thunk my melons and squeeze (ever so gently) my tomatoes. I am that person. I smell my apples and weigh my lemons ever so carefully in my hand so that I pick only the juciest lemons and sweetest apples. Mostly I buy what is on my list. I used to be tempted by the two for one things, but not any more. Buying two of anything you weren't going to buy in the first place is not really a bargain, unless it is something you use regularly.
The aisles were filled with "lets get healthy" stuff. Everyone trying to undo all the damage done from the indulgences of the holidays. I am no different. I bought low fat mayonnaise, but that was on the list along with fat free sour cream and low fat, no sugar yogurt.
I did buy a whole peeled pineapple. We sat here and ate some of it last night as we were watching the television. It was so good. Much better than a bar of chocolate. I might have some more for breakfast.
I spent some time on Pinterest, just nosing around. I have my favourites. There is plenty of inspiration on there and on Instagram. I love to peruse. It costs nothin but my time. Window shopping as it were. I limit myself. I do. You could easily get lost in there for hours, but I don't let myself.
Another way to lose yourself (I discovered over the holidays) is those "Real Housewives" shows. I spent almost half a day one day watching the Real Housewives of Orange County cuddling Mitzie on the sofa while Todd was off in town doing Todd things. It was oddly compelling. I found myself thinking over and over again . . . hey that is just what it was like at the Manor, or that was how they acted at the Manor. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction, except it was better this time because I wasn't having to live it and was simply an outsider looking in and thanking my lucky stars it wasn't happening to me. Life is good.
Mitzie is back to feeling pretty splendiferous. Thank goodness. Thank goodness. Thank goodness. I am so happy about that. (Can you tell?)
Have you seen this? Its called the "Quack Muzzle." It's a kind of muzzle you can put on your dog which allows them to breathe properly without feeling they are being too restrained, For dogs like Mitzie it would be more of a help than a hindrance. She walks with her nose to the ground continuously and she picks up and eats what she finds before Todd can stop her. Half the time he doesn't even notice. I am sure she was ill because she picked up and ate something she shouldn't have. People are so dirty and just throw their garbage all over the place. Or maybe I would be better served to just train Todd to pay better attention. Hmmm . . . quite a conundrum there.
It is kind of cute, but I really don't think Mitzie would tolerate it, and I am sure Todd would feel rather silly walking a dog wearing a duck's bill.
We had a surprise visit last evening from the Zone Leaders, Elder Allen and Elder VanDyken. They brought us this lovely little rose bush. Still keeping up with us they are, even though we are not on the Mission any longer. I like that. It makes me feel good and this is a beautiful little rose bush. We will plant it once the danger of heavy frosts are over and think of these two nice lads forever more. They helped me to get family search and ancestry, etc. onto my ipad and showed me how to use them. I was pretty excited about that. Did you know you can now dictate little stories into them so that a bazillion years from now if you have progeny that want to know more about you, they can listen to them in YOUR voice! I know! Quite simply amazing. Todd and I are so going to do that. He has lots of stories about growing up during the War, and I have . . . well, lots of stories!
Can you imagine how fun it would be to discover your great grandmother's family tree and actually be able to hear her speaking and telling stories on it? I know, A M A Z I N G!
Another thing which I have been enjoying these past couple of weeks is this game on the iPad called Township. My town is named Raynerville. (I know . . . how very original.) I have gotten up to level 18 on it and I really enjoy it, planting corn and wheat and tomatoes and carrots, etc. Knitting sweaters and making cloth, cheese, butter, cream. Growing strawberries, building houses and community buildings. Filling orders etc. Its pretty good. The only thing I can't figure out to do is how to build a burger or where to build a burger. I have orders for burgers, but I don't know how to fill them or where the fast food place is. I will learn I guess. It must be there somewhere. In the meantime I am enjoying feeding my chickens, cows and sheep. Its fun.
Oh and I taught my oldest daughter how to copy and paste on her tablet last night. Now nobody will be able to bully her on there (and somebody has been doing just that) and then lie about it afterwards without me knowing about it. Lets just say it was interesting. She is a lot more capable than some people think.
And with that I will leave you with a thought for today . . .

In the English Kitchen today . . . Mac and Cheese Pie. Simply delicious. (And you can halve the recipe to make much less for the smaller family.)
Have a great Wednesday. We are going to our friends Tina and Tony's for a late lunch. I am looking forward to that! Tina is a great cook. Tomorrow night we are starting Addiction Recovery together at the church. Going to try to get a handle on our weight. I've tried everything but God. I reckon He is the healer of all things and if He can't help me, no diet ever will. Don't forget!

And I do too!
ReplyDeleteyes eveyone is talking a new start health wise for the new year..I have to say..it kills me when they say all you have to do to stay well is to eat well and move..I beg to differ.
Things happen to healthy people..that is not all you have to do..accidents happen..genetics etc..happy Mitzi is better..not sure about those quackers..lol
pretty little rose bush..love pineapple..have a lovely lunch!
Enjoy your day ! It's always good to get together with friends!
ReplyDeleteMy Marie, I can't believe it's three days since I left a comment...I know I have felt a bit under the weather but that's no excuse..just me lying around.......first I'm so pleased that Mitzie is back to,her old self, what a relief that is, I know just how bad we feel when our wee pals are poorly......as you rightly say it was probably something she picked up whilst out.....love that cardi pattern are you going to kin it ..don't know when you will find the time, what with your lovely crafts, painting, your new game of building your farm, cooking delicious foodstuffs, entertaining whoever might pop,by.....phew I would be exhausted LOL....like the idea of a wee break once Todds treatments are finished and once he gets his strength back.....must go Masy is just back from her walk with Lyn. Xxxx
ReplyDeleteI am with you MOnique, I beg to differ also. I think so many other things come into play. Genetics for one. Some people can eat like horses and stay thin, others just have a predisposition towards gaining weight and don't have to do much. Todd has a very high metabolism and burns calories off very quickly. It is a vicious circle. My arthritis means I can't move about the way I would like to and I put on weight, which makes it even harder. All a person can do is their best. I don't think Mitzie would like the duck bill at all and I know Todd wouldn't, lol xoxo
ReplyDeleteWe had a perfectly brilliant time Pam! xoxo
I thought you might not be feeling well Sybil. I always worry when I don't hear from you! Glad you are feeling better today. I doubt that I will have the skill to knit that sweater, but I would so love to. Yes, I am looking at Copenhagen seriously or Scotland. (I know which one you would prefer, lol!) Love to you, Masy and Mary. xoxo
