Welcoming February . . .

We saw catkins on the trees bordering the motorway on our way back from our District meeting yesterday and the trees are taking on a bit of a green flush . . . it almost seems to early, but in reality it is not  . . . our Oriental Poppy in the front garden has come up all green again . . . and the buds on the tree by the front door are swollen and flushed with pink . . .

This is the soul's month  . . .  the month of whispered hopes . . .  the month when we feel as if at last we can turn our faces towards the glad promise of Spring  . . .

The beds and borders are peppered with green tips  . . .  crocus and hyacinth beginning to push their tender green arms through the mud and a few snow drops have begun to swing their fairy bells in the teeth of a raw wet wind . . .  but these, alas are mere imitations . . .

The days between Candlemas and St. Valentines are days in which we must be content with hints and glimpses . . . for Winter is not quite done with us yet.  My listening heart however has caught the far-away sound on the wind and hope wells up in my soul . . .  spring is almost now within reach . . .

There is something about the word February that stirs the heart with an irrational but irrepressible joy  . . .  arrrows of rain fall sharp and cold from a wintery sky . . . the doors of the North not yet being barred against the threat of snow, but . . .  once January has slipped off the calendar, nothing can ever be quite the same . . .

As ghosts of snowdrops flutter in the grass  . . . a blue light lingers on the edge of the lengthening days and the voice of February's thrust comes pouring down the wind carrying with it the impending promise of spring which is waiting in the wings to burst upon the stage.

February . . .  the month of whispered hopes  . . .

We are off to Runcorn this morning to do flat inspections.  Not looking forward to it.  It's wet and windy and blah . . .  and it's a difficult place to find your way around at the best of times.  Wish us luck!

A thought to carry with you through today  . . .

  1. Morning Marie, looks like it is going to be a nice sunny day down here I hope your visit to Runcorn goes better than you think....Spring down here really has gone mad...I saw the first of the daffodils about a month ago...yes at beginning of January on the verge on the entrance to the next village along from us...they have already mostly died back, same for snowdrops, but they are almost on time...there is an row of flowering cherry trees on the way into Bath and they are looking beautiful in full bloom last week..at my gate I have a small trailing willow...not very trailing !! but the wee White buds are all there with the promise of leaves to come....however if the frosts come we have no idea what will happen to all the tender buds on the likes of the clematis etc...certainly a change is in the air......good luck today xxxx

  2. How funny Marie a few suburbs over and we have Runcorn. Sadly our Runcorn, like my suburb, has lost the farms and rural feel and it isn't the most pleasant place now.

I hope you have an enjoyable day and that the inspections go well.

I hear your yearning for the green tips that are teasing your days. Hopefully the winter will give way to a gentle spring for you. We are nearing the end of a five day heatwave and I will be happy when the wall of humidity gives way to more reasonable weather. Last year I discovered that 42 Centigrade was nothing if it was not humid.

    God bless.

  4. We used to have a PussyWillow tree in the back here and I'd look forward to seeing the catkins every spring. I do miss it. The only signs of Spring that we have are some green tops of daffodils coming up beside the house where it is sheltered and sunny. February for us still very much winter for the most part. Usually it is our snowiest month. This year is proving quite mild for us but it's not over yet. Hope your day goes well. Traveling in the rain isn't any fun, but better than snow and ice. Take good care !

  5. I don't know about you Sybil, but it feels very early this year! But then again, we have had a fairly mild winter, if a wet and windy one, with one windy rainy storm after another it seems! I, for one, am looking forward to some dry weather. The sun needn't shine, just be dry! haha Hope your day is a good one! xoxo

The humidity would get me Suzan. I do not think I could bear it. I am a hot/humid wimp I'm afraid! xoxo

Oh, I hope the freezing rain doesn't prove a big problem Monique! it can be quite pretty when it coats everything in glass, but not so fun to drive in! xoxo

You are right there Pam. Much better to travel in rain and wind than ice and snow! Have a blessed day! xoxo

  6. Hi Marie~

Loved your thoughts today. I'm looking forward to spring, and I promise, there is nothing green in my neck of the woods . . . maybe the pine trees. Your pictures of so pretty, and I am looking forward to seeing green, hopefully sooner than later!

Thank you for your Spiritual Enlightenment, loved that talk from Pres. Uchtdorf, one of my favorite!

    Have a good day!

    Hugs,
    Barb

  7. Your writing is like sweet poetry. It does give one hope that spring really is on it's way. It is so cold here and it is hard to go our in it each day. I imagine checking out the flats is quite the job. I do hope you had a safe and sweet day.
Sending love and hugs to you and blessings to for all that you do~

  8. You're welcome Barb! I love President Uchtdorf as well and enjoy his talks. I have a special letter that he wrote me a few years ago that I cherish. He's a special man, but then again, all of our leaders are! xoxo

Thanks LeAnn! Checking the flats is something I enjoy. Getting to know the missionary companionships (In other areas other than our own) on a one to one level and see how they are doing. It's great! Love and hugs and blessings for all that you do as well! xoxo
