The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .
FOR TODAY, February 2, 2016
Outside my window ...
It's dark, cold and very windy. The wind has been crazy. On our way back from dropping off a meal to someone yesterday I saw a tree which had been pulled out by it's roots, and of course because it was bin day for a lot of people lots of empty bins blowing around. I don't like it when it is really windy like that. It can be very dangerous to be out and about and it scares me.
I am thinking ...
Is today Groundhog day? I can't remember. I am starting to lose my Canadian-ness! Either that or dementia is kicking in! The Dementia thing really bothers me though because I forget things all the time. Sometimes I even forget what I am talking about halfway through a sentence when I am speaking. It's okay when I am writing because the first half is staring me right in the eyes. But when I am speaking the words are not there for me to see.
I am thankful for ...
It doesn't appear that anything in the yard blew over or away last night. Daylight may tell a different story, but for now it all looks okay!
In the kitchen ...
Snickerdoodle Bread. It's delicious! The recipe makes two loaves. One to keep and one to give away.
On my "To Cook" list ...
Egg Roll Stir Fry from South Your Mouth. It looks fabulously delicious and pretty healthy too.
I am creating ...
I've been working on a second one of these. I just love these Home Sweet Home papers. I followed a You Tube Tutorial for this one. I am loving how it's turned out. By Annette Green.
Printable Valentine Treat Bags from The Farm Chicks.
I think these fox mitts and socks are just adorable. From Drops Design.
This mouse in a box is awfully cute. From Smitten for the Wee Generation. It's not a pattern, it's a finished product, but how hard could this be to do?
Very, very cute Crochet Booties. From Ravelry. These are just adorable.
I am reading ...
The Signature of All Things, by Elizabeth Gilbert
Elizabeth Gilbert’s first novel in twelve years is an extraordinary story of botany, exploration and desire, spanning across much of the 19th century. The novel follows the fortunes of the brilliant Alma Whittaker (daughter of a bold and charismatic botanical explorer) as she comes into her own within the world of plants and science. As Alma’s careful studies of moss take her deeper into the mysteries of evolution, the man she loves draws her in the opposite direction—into the realm of the spiritual, the divine and the magical. Alma is a clear-minded scientist; Ambrose is a Utopian artist. But what unites this couple is a shared passion for knowing—a desperate need to understand the workings of this world, and the mechanism behind of all life.
The Signature of All Things is a big novel, about a big century. Exquisitely researched and told at a galloping pace, this story novel soars across the globe—from London, to Peru, to Philadelphia, to Tahiti, to Amsterdam and beyond. It is written in the bold, questing spirit of that singular time. Alma Whittaker is a witness to history, as well as maker of history herself. She stands on the cusp of the modern, with one foot still in the Enlightened Age, and she is certain to be loved by readers across the world.
So far this is a page turner for me!
Looking forward to ...
Our District Meeting this morning. Also looking forward to my appointment at the Gastro Clinic at the hospital on the 8th Feb. Maybe I will finally find out the results of my Upper Endocscopy that I had in November. It's been a very long time. Hopefully it is nothing sinister. I can't think that they would make me wait this long if it was.
I am learning ...
To be thankful in all things. This is an on-going process. I don't always feel very thankful for some of the stuff I have to go through, but time has taught me that there is always something positive to take from these experiences.
Dreaming about ...
Lace trimmed pillow cases . . . I am a lacy kind of a girl . . .
Script painted furniture . . . painted wood . . . I love painted wood.
French Country Kitchens . . . look at all that light and that painted wooden furniture . . . sigh . . .

It is better to cry than to be angry, because anger hurts others,
while tears flow silently through the soul and cleanses the heart.

One of my favourite things ...
Tea Parties . . . I get to use my tea cups and make dainties for people to enjoy. Herbal teas are lovely. I prefer the really fruity ones.
A peek into my day ...
O cup of Life that holds such precious brew,
The brightness of the morning cold as dew,
And sweet as honey in a golden comb,
The blessed comfort of a little home.
A field of purple clover out in bloom,
Filling the countryside with rich perfume,
Dipping away to the horizon's brim;
A meadow lark piping a morning hymn.
A little girl wearing a scarlet coat,
An old man hobbling out to cast his vote,
A new pram with a satin coverlet,
A little boy hugging his tiny pet.
A radio with a small golden face,
Whose probing finger seeks through worlds of space,
Across a continent and o'er a sea,
To bring a song into this room for me.
O cup of Life . . . give me of your rich wine,
That I may drink your vintage half divine,
and half of common earth where mortals eat,
The bread of heaven . . . made from common wheat.
~Edna Jaques, Fireside Poems, 1950
I do so love to read poetry and this is one of my favourites. I am a poetic person.

And I do too!!
Egg rolls are the only part of any "Chinese" food I've ever liked, so I've bookmarked that recipe--Thank you for it. And that bed in the sunshine! O' to have such windows! We have so few in this apartment and none catch good light, really. That bed looks wonderful to me. It would be bliss in the winter, all that sunshine while reading or napping.
ReplyDeleteHow lovely. I have enjoyed your post today. I am off to look at several things. Have a very blessed day.
ReplyDeleteHi, Marie! Yes, it is Groundhog day back home... I don't pay much attention to these things though, as winter is still winter, groundhog or no--and it says so on the calendar! ;) I hear you on the dementia thing... I have what I cann pre-menstrual dementia--that time of the month coming, and I seem to suddenly forget everything... LOL! Oh, that Egg Roll Stir Fry looks good--nice & easy too. Those little fox socks & mittens are too CUTE!! Love seeing what you're working on these days too... I'm slow to visit lately--sorry 'bout that. :/ Glad to be sharing my cuppa break with you and catch now now, though. Happy week, dear friend! ((LOVE & BIG HUGS))
ReplyDeleteHappy Groundhogs day! I'm waiting for the sun to rise here so we see what that famous guy has to say - we'll have 6 more weeks of winter or not. I think we will. Just a few more minutes and we'll see what he says.
ReplyDeleteSo many pretties here..you ? Dementia?
ReplyDeleteHardly..look at everything you remember all the time..!
I think your mind is very busy..and that's why when talking you skip over thoughts:)
I love all Chinese food Val, but especially Egg Rolls. If I can have that flavour without the fattening pastry covering, it's a bonus for me! I am deffo going to be making this! I am all for light, especially in the Winter. We need all we can get! xoxo
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed Suzan! That made my day! xoxo
I agree Tracy, Winter will end when Winter ends and I don't think a groundhog has a lot to say about it. But I do love the old traditions all the same! I could see you in those fox socks and mittens. I wish I was a better knitter, because I would be on them in a flash! I just love them! Love and hugs to you, all three. xoxo
Happy Groundhog's day Pam! Hope yours doesn't see his shadow! xoxo
I think you are right Monique. We live in such an instant world, its sometimes hard for our hands and mouths to keep up with what's going on in our minds. Its no wonder we have a brief burp every now and again! xoxo
Many pretty things today, but that brooch is absolutely fabulous!
ReplyDeleteLove the mouse in the box Marie, you could do that no bother I'm sure...in fact I can't think of very much craft wise that you couldn't try your hand to...and succeed...you have such talent....it's been a lovely sunny day today but the strong wind is so cold it feels as if it goes right through you. Please take care if you must go out... Xxxx
ReplyDeleteIsn't it pretty Laura! I bet it costs a bomb! xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt was really cold here as well Sybil, although pretty dry. We sat in a freezing chapel for half the day! No heat on. Brr . . . xoxo
