The Simple Woman's Daybook . . .
FOR TODAY, July 28th, 2015
Outside my window ...
It's dull and overcast. And quite chilly. Where has summer gone??
I am thinking ...
Meeting up with a friend at her church ladies' group today. It is a strawberry luncheon and they will be sharing crafts. A bit nervous about going as I have never met any of them except for my friend.
I am thankful for ...
Having a Todd and a Mitzie in my life, as well as the Gospel. Life is good.
In the kitchen ...
Fire and Ice Pickled Beetroot. A one jar pickled beet recipe that has a bit of a snap. Delicious!
On my "To Cook" list ...
These Spicy Fried Pork Chops and Gravy look really good. From Creole Contessa.
I am creating ...
I have several of these that my mother made. The tops are crocheted or knitted instead of sewn. I love these for drying my wet hands on in the kitchen. You can find a complete tutorial on Kleios Belly.
If you like working with felt, you will love this Christmas Penny Rug. I have actually made this one. I had it finished in time for Christmas last year. Simple and fun to do. From Cath's Pennies Designs. She has patterns for just about every season and holiday!
Grow Your Own Geodes. Kids would love this. From Dollar Store Crafts.

I love these people painted rocks. Such a simple idea and so much fun. Kids could play with them on long trips, matching different bodies with different heads, etc.
Make Your Own Mod Podge. Mod Podge is expensive. If this works, what a money saver! From Do It Yourself Divas.
I am reading ...
The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, by Muriel Spark
I had seen the film a long time ago but never read the book it was based on.
In 1930s Edinburgh, six ten-year-old girls, Sandy, Rose, Mary, Jenny, Monica, and Eunice are assigned Miss Jean Brodie, who describes herself as being "in my prime," as their teacher. Miss Brodie, determined that they shall receive an education in the original sense of the Latin verb educere, "to lead out," gives her students lessons about her personal love life and travels, promoting art history, classical studies, and fascism. Under her mentorship, these six girls whom Brodie singles out as the elite group among her students—known as the "Brodie set"—begin to stand out from the rest of the school. However in one of the novel's typical flash-forwards we learn that one of them will later betray Brodie, ruining her teaching career, but that she will never learn which.
This novel takes these same girls through to age 17. Fascinating read.
I am hoping ...
With this next season of Downton Abby being it's last and the cancellation of The Starlings, I am hoping that Brendon Coyle will soon be on our screens as another character. He's one of my favourite actors.
Makes me smile ...
Knock Knock Jokes. I heard a good one yesterday . . .
Knock Knock
Who's there?
Moustache
Moustache who?
Moustache you a question, but am shaving it for later.
I am learning ...
Mindfulness
Awareness of ourselves and the world around us – called mindfulness – can improve our mental wellbeing.
Around the house ...
Washi Tape Piano Keys, from We Heart It.
"She Sheds," a womans answer to The Man Cave.
The backsplash in Monet's kitchen in Giverny, France.
This reminds me of my Nan's kitchen. Lovely.

An indoor treehouse . . .
I am pondering ...
Todd did not sleep all night last night. I had a hard time falling asleep, so I went in the other room to read and fell asleep there. When I got up I went into our room to get my glasses and he was sitting up awake reading. He had not slept all night. I told him to try again. I wonder why this happens to us every now and again? I hate it when it does.
A favourite quote for the day ...

A peek into my day ...
I spend far too much of it thinking about cooking or eating . . . sigh . . .
And that's my daybook for this week!

And I do too!!
Oh Marie, poor Todd. Sadly I know this wide awake all night feeling too well.
ReplyDeleteI hope you enjoy your time with the ladies today. It sounds like a lot of fun Strawberry lunch sounds exotic and delighful just for a start.
God bless you today and always.
Hi, Marie! Oh, what fun with your Strawberry Luncheon and crafts today--ENJOY!! It's been a cooler summer here too, and now we're in a bit of a rainy period having been mostly and unusually dry summer so far--a strange summer. Last week I had corduroy trousers and a jumper on! LOVE the pretty-topped kitchen towels! I want to make some of these. And I think I'll make for my sister too, who is is moving house this week--a nice house-warming giftie! While I've not been following along with Downton Abbey all along, I do LOVE Brendan Coyle!! Anything he's in, I want to see! ;o) Oh, that She Shed is GORGEOUS!! I want one... LOL! Woman's answer to the Man Cave--YES!! Or a Gypsy Caravan--would love one of those bright-colored hideaways. Hope Todd will find some better rest soon--not good with no sleeping. :o/ ((LOVE & HUGS))
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say I would love, love, love that beach female shed. Wow heaven on earth.
ReplyDeleteHi Marie, enjoy your strawberry luncheon. I'm sure there's nothing to be nervous about and you'll make new friends. Poor Todd! I am a terrible insomniac myself so know what it's like. I have now given in though and resorted to sleeping tablets from the docs. I was reluctant at first but they have really helped. Lots of love xxx
ReplyDeleteThe strawberry lunch sounds wonderful. You should fit right in since there are going to be crafts involved. If you wonder where summer went, it is here. We are going to be the hottest we've been so far this year. I'm doing all I can to keep cool. I hope your Tuesday is terrific !
ReplyDeleteYou will have fun..one friend is all you need to go in w/ confidence:)
ReplyDeleteLove all the ideas..I bet your snowman felted craft is beautiful!
THose rocks:)
Thanks Suzan! It's awful to have insomnia for sure. A female shed would be the best. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks Tracy. I would love a shepherd's hut. I think I could do one of those up really nicely. WE are having lots of rain this week also. An early night for us both tonight I think. Love and hugs.xoxo
Thanks Kate! Our Docs here are very reluctant to give out sleeping tablets. Probably a good thing. xoxo
Thanks Pam!The weather seems to be crazy all over the world I think. You can't rely on anything anymore! xoxo
Thanks Monique. I will try to find a pic of my felt craft and send it to you so you can see! I knew you would like the rocks. xoxo
Sorry I am late with my comments again..with teh new I pad I do not find it so easy to reply with teh small keyboard. Tonight I had to come n teh laptop so I am taking that opportunity to reply. So gla dthat you got home form hospital as well...What a pity about poor Tod do hop ehe sleeps tonight. I have been so utterly exhausted last three nights that I have gone out like a light and will do so again tonight I think although I am not quite so stressed out. Mary still in hospial and i think is going to be for quite a time at least 6 weeks maybe more. She ha dthought thhat after Aug 4th when she sees the Dr again she woudl be able to start walking again...but speaking on teh side to aphysio it appears that wont happen that is just the start it coudl be anything up to 6 weeks after that and then maybe even more...I havnt sai dto her but did say today to think of 6 weeks an dthat shocked her a bit...but better prepare her. My niece Beth is comming down on Thursday she has asked to meet teh care team etc. Beth is our next of Kin and has power of atorney for us both, she says we are her responsibility so wants to take care of us bless her just wish she still tsaye din Bristol but they are now up at Leamington spa takes her 2 1/2 hours to drive down but she has asked for Thursday off and they have said ok...night night God Bless you Todd and Mitzie xxx
ReplyDeleteThose piano keys! :) And I love that little kitchen too. I wish I'd taken so many more pictures inside my grandparents' house, but I could have a thousand and would wish for more. I don't have a single one of their pantry, and that always makes me sad. It was a tiny (tiny!) little side-room off their kitchen, just beadboard-type wall cupboards from floor-t-ceiling on one side, a window on the third wall, and the Hoosier cabinet/hutch on the third wall. The picture you shared reminds me of the simplicity of their kitchen: It didn't have cupboards or counters, so the pull-out surface of that old pantry Hoosier and the kitchen table served as the only work-spaces. Only three chairs fit at the table, although we somehow squeezed four there the times one of my brothers and I would stay with them in the summer and eat lunch with them. I'm going to make myself cry as I think about it! I can smell it even now. What is it with kitchens! More than any other room, they just steal and break my heart, so many sweet memories. ♥
ReplyDeleteI hope you two sleep better tonight.
You always have a fun Daybook entry. You do come up with the cutest ideas. I am now looking for inexpensive Birthday and Christmas gifts since my husband is retiring and I won't have as much freedom with funds. There were some unique ideas here.
ReplyDeleteI really loved the painted rocks; such a cute idea.
Your book looks interesting. Wow, there will be a lot of people unhappy about Downton Abby having it's last season.
I liked the Mindfulness thought; I will have to ponder on that one.
Now the Woman's answer to a Man Cave; is way cute.
Thanks again for brightening my day. I hope the two of you have been sleeping better. I hate it when I don't get a good nights sleep.
Sending hugs your way!
We have had a couple of really good nights sleep now LeAnn! so all is well. I do have insomnia from time to time and it's just awful! xoxo
