Five Things About Me

 photo 3c15.jpg

What day is it kids?  It's Thursday and we all know what that means!  It's time for another five things about me post!  I hope you aren't getting tired of these posts!  I still have a lot about me to talk about!

I suffer from acute Motion Sickness.   I have been this way since I was a girl.   I even get sick on a swing.   This means that I can never go on any fair ground rides, get sick on boats, in cars, on trains, etc.   In the car it is especially bad if I have to sit in the back seat.  I don't know why this is.  It doesn't bother me at night however, unless we are on an extremely winding or up and down road.  I would love to be able to go on loop de loops, or roller coasters, but alas . . .  it's just not to be.  Todd would love to go on a cruise one day, but I have my doubts.  If my motion sickness kicked in it would not be much of a holiday for me, but instead several weeks of wanting to die . . . not sure I want to take the risk.

Christmas is my favourite holiday.  I love LOVE Christmas.   I love the music, the sights, the sounds, the smells . . .  the message of love and of hope which is attached to it.  I know that the Saviour wasn't really born on December 25th, but that doesn't bother me.  It drives Todd to distraction.   I don't care which day the Saviour was born on, I only care that he was born and if the whole world chooses to celebrate it on the 25th of December then that's okay with me!  I love Christmas Trees and and coloured lights and carols and crackers.  I just love CHRISTMAS!  I don't care if there are pagan symbols attached.  I believe that it is what is in your heart which counts.  And to me a Christmas Tree is a symbol of Christ's birth not the symbol of any ancient pagan ritual.

I do miss having snow at Christmas.

I have always been a voracious reader but I don't really like to read out loud.   My voice gets tired and my mouth gets dry and my throat gets sore.  I did read aloud to my children every night before bedtime.   We would all gather on the girls' double bed and I would read stories to them all.   I would make up voices for each of the characters, etc.   Of course by the time my youngest son came along, there was only him on the bed with me reading him stories because of the wide age difference.  I often made up stories for him.  He loved that and I always made sure he was a character in the story I was making up.   I hope that he remembers those special times.

I shared a bedroom (and a bed for many years) all of my growing up life from the age of three on with my younger sister. We had a double bed until we were teenagers.   When we were really small I went to bed a bit later than she did.   I was utterly convinced there was a monster who lived beneath our bed.  It was a monster that ate little children, but who didn't like to eat heads and so when I got into bed I would very carefully make sure that my sister was all covered up and all of our stuffed toys we slept with were covered up and that only heads were showing . . .  that way we would be safe.   We did not always get along.  Sharing a room during our teenage years was sometimes a big pain in the butt!  But as an adult I have come to really appreciate the close bond between us which was shaped during all of those years of sharing a room together.  She is and always will be my best friend, even though we may have different opinions and thoughts on some things, I will never let the monster beneath the bed gobble her up.

When I was a girl playing hopscotch was one of my favourite games.   In fact I still love it, although my arthritis these days means I would probably fall over more often than not!  I loved playing out doors as a child.   At school I loved recess which meant playing jump rope and ball  and  . . .  hopscotch!

And there you have it!  Five new things about me.  Some interesting, some boring . . .  all me.

A thought to carry with you through today . . .

Have a wonderful Thursday!  Wherever you are, whatever you do, I hope the sun shines down on you!

Note - all the pictures today are artwork of Joan Walsh Anglund.   I have always loved her illustrations, since I was a child.

  1. Lovely illastrations Marie..
I think you wold be ok. on a cruise Marie. The ships are so big nowadays that I can honestly say that you never feel them moving at all.....unless you are unfortunate to hot a storm...and in all the crises we have done that was only once..and I have to say there were a few green faces ...but again the ships Dr. give sout sickness pills even before a storm comes that help I think...So don't dismiss the idea. Maybe start with just a wee trip of 5/6 days...Not sure where your nearest Port is...we are lucky to be quite near Southampton....Anyway have a lovely day. It is very cold down here only 2 deg when I came throughat 6.40am...now getting quite dark looking so think might rain soon...I will have to drive up to church to help with the coffee morning....had hoped that I would once again be able to trundle up ! It has been wonderful to be able to do thaat these last couple of months xxxx

  3. I also suffer from motion sickness. I now take an over-the-counter drug called Bonine (not sure if available in the UK). It works very well and does not make me sleepy. You only take it once a day.

  4. I love Christmas too and although we usually do have it here, snow is something I don't like at all. It is pretty to look at but also means the roads get bad for traveling and since Christmas is a time most of my family travels to be home, I prefer a Christmas without snow. Thankfully we still have a few months left to enjoy without it. Hope you have a Happy Thursday!

  6. Good to know these things about you. There is some motion sickness among members of my family, though not with me. One of our daughters experiences carsickness. She does take something if she is going to be on a plane, etc., and sits on the passenger side of the front seat if she isn't driving. Curvy roads are not fun!

  7. Yeah! Five things day!!!! I enjoy it. :-) First off, I always loved Joan Walsh artwork. I used to try and draw faces like hers when I was young. Ah, yes, motion sickness...ME TOO! I can't read anything while the car is in motion. A cruise is something we want to do one day but I've wondered if I would get sick too. I think that there are pills to take to prevent it. Many people I know take cruised often and I never hear that they get sick at all. I'll have to check on that though. Steve wants to take an Alaskan cruise. How about you and Todd? Maybe someday we can go on the same one!!! :-) Wouldn't THAT be so fun!
It doesn't surprise me that you love Christmas! My sister love Halloween the most but it's Christmas all the way for me. Such a wonderful time of year to celebrate the birth of Christ. Yes, who cares when he was actually born. Celebrate it anyway is my view. Before you know it, we will be baking up a storm for that great holiday.
Thanks for sharing your Five Things! Love ya! xoxo

  8. It was very cold here yesterday Sybil, and we even had our electric fire on for a short last night to take the chill off! xxoo

I hope you have a wonderful time Suzan! I am not sure I would be able to take the chance. What if the sea sickness medicine didn't work. It doesn't bear thinking about! xxoo

I'll have to look for that Laura. Although I am not sure, like you, if it is available here in the UK. Thanks! xxoo

I agree Monique, I am indeed blessed! xxoo

There are no such thing as straight roads over here Nellie! They all wind and go up and down. lol xxoo

Valerie, why am I not surprised that once again we mirror each other in these ways??? Twins from another mother I say! A holiday together would be fun. I think the men would be quite jealous as we would be talking non stop to each other and they wouldn't be able to get a word in edgewise! xxoo

  10. I love the 5 things about you.
I don't like motion much either. I have been on a few rides; but didn't really enjoy the experience.
Christmas is my favorite holiday too.
I wish that I would have had a sister. My three girls always shared a room until they were teenagers and were able to get a bigger home. They got along very well.
I think that kind of sharing is good.
I used to make up stories for my children too. I still make up songs once in a while and sometimes little songs.
Thanks for bringing back the memories and blessings for you1
